Online, Mason began contacting 15-year-old Alex and began sending him graphic images. Then the relationship turned into sex.
In the weeks leading up to his death, Mason bribed Alex to keep it a secret lest it be made public. And on December 12, 2019, Mason drove Alex to Ashley Woods near Altrincham after picking him up from home.
The Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School student was later killed by him in what Chester Crown Court described as a “violent, repeated attack with a blunt weapon”.
He spent about an hour with Alex’s body before dumping it in the woods and leaving himself unmarked while drinking with friends.
Mason was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 28 years in prison before the Parole Board considered his release. The minimum sentence was reduced to 26 years after he appealed.
A documentary examining the role of social media in the case will be shown this week. In it, Alex’s friends, family and experts discuss what happened over two years ago. Tonight, April 29, at 10:30pm, the show is on ITV1.
