All the DC Universe Easter eggs in The Flash trailer (including the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman!)

After months of waiting, DC dropped another trailer during the Super Bowl for its upcoming superhero blockbuster, Flash. Directed by Andy Muschetti (Mom, It), this film features Barry Allen going back in time to prevent the death of his mother Nora, only to find himself in an entirely new reality and struggling with the Earth-shattering consequences.

Although lead actor Ezra Miller has been a lightning rod for controversy with their many, many criminal acts, all eyes will be on Flash and how his time travel story will affect the DC Extended Universe. With everything the trailer has given the audience, this movie will undoubtedly be an exciting new chapter for Flash and his friends.

Audiences finally get a glimpse of Flash’s origin story with the death of his mother, all of which was blamed on his father, Henry, for which he spent years in prison. The trailer features a flashback showing a young Barry and Henry holding a dying Nora in their arms.

And while actor Billy Crudup (The guards, Hello tomorrow) originally played Barry’s father in the DCEU, this time he is portrayed by Ron Livingston (Office space, Swearing).

Batfleck is back

In what should be his final ride in the DCEU, Ben Affleck is shown hurtling through the streets in his Batcycle, fighting crime as the Dark Knight.

Affleck’s Batman is also shown warning Barry against going back in time to save his mother, claiming that messing with history can “destroy everything”. His fears proved correct as Barry’s tinkering eventually brought this guy back.

Kneel before Zod!

Since Clark Kent was never sent to Earth in this new timeline, Flash and his allies are forced to face the evil Kryptonian, General Zod, without him. Zod appears on Earth once again with his army to terraform the planet with his World Engine as he did in Man of Steel.

With his godlike powers and unrelenting cruelty, Zod proved to be a difficult foe to defeat. The DCEU started with Zod, so it seems fitting that the timeline ends with him.

A tale of two Barrys

In the new timeline created by Barry, the hero faces a version of himself from that reality. This Barry is probably the one who grew up with his mother after the Flash prevented her from being killed.

There is a clear difference between them, because the new Barry has much longer hair. But while one Barry is charged with comically accurate yellow lightning, the other uses the blue lightning commonly seen on the character in the DCEU, making it easier to tell both Barrys apart on the battlefield.

‘I am Batman’

Saying these iconic two words, Michael Keaton makes a full return to the big screen to help both Barry as the Batman of this newly created timeline. Although the character appears to be in his 70s, this Dark Knight is still probably in the prime of life.

Flying through the air in his Batsuit like a rocket, this Caped Crusader is shown pulling his opponents into the air before slamming them to the ground with brute force. It just goes to show that even time can’t weigh Batman down.

No more metahumans?

Barry mentions in this trailer that by creating a new timeline, he inadvertently created a world without metahumans. It is unknown if this is technically true, as metahumans existed in the DCEU long before the events of Man of Steel.

However, introducing the world to Superman helped bring the metahumans out of hiding. The absence of superpowered groups like the Justice League doesn’t bode well for Earth with Zod’s arrival on the planet, which is sure to force Barry to form his own team.

Supergirl takes off

As many people already know, Sasha Calle stars in this film as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, who has taken Clark Kent’s place as the Kryptonian inhabiting Earth in this new timeline. And based on her outfit and a shot of her in a jail cell, it appears that Kara was captured after arriving on Earth, similar to the version of Superman seen in Fire place the comic that serves as the basis for this film. Based on the source material, it is very possible that he is being held captive by the US government.

Barry and Bruce are seen at the end of the trailer, seemingly breaking her out of her prison in the mountains, but she proves to herself that she is a one-man army. Given her Kryptonian powers, the heroes will likely need her to stand a chance against Zod and his army. But even with her incredible abilities, audiences will have to see for themselves if she can help Batman and the Flashes save Earth.

To watch Flash in all theaters on June 16, 2023.
