Amber Heard Move To Settle Defamation Case With Johnny Depp

Amber Heard revealed in an Instagram post on Monday that her defamation lawsuit against ex-husband Johnny Depp has been settled.

The settlement came months after a televised trial that lasted several weeks and ended in a jury finding that Heard defamed Depp in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed.

The deal with Depp, 59, was reached after “a lot of consideration”, according to Heard, 36, who described it as “very difficult”.

On June 1, a US judge found Heard liable for defaming Depp in his 2018 Washington Post op-ed, in which he identified himself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse” without mentioning Depp.

The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Though Fairfax County District Court Judge Penney Azcarate ultimately reduced the punitive damages to $350,000, the state’s legal limit, bringing the total damages to $10.4 million.

Heard, who appealed the decision earlier this month, claimed in an Instagram post that the “smear” she saw online was “an amplified version of how women are revictimized” when they come forward.
