AMD previews FSR 3.0, which now includes frame generation

Despite just launching FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.0 in June, AMD just announced FSR 3.0 at its RDNA 3 launch event — along with a new piece of technology that AMD calls Fluid Motion Frames. We don’t have a ton of details yet, but it looks like FSR 3.0 will go head to head with Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) generating unique frames.

According to AMD, FSR 3.0 will provide up to twice the frame rate of FSR 2.0, which appears to come exclusively from Fluid Motion Frames technology. AMD hasn’t shared any details on how this technology works, but the company has confirmed that it uses frame generation similar to Nvidia’s recently announced DLSS 3.

As we analyze in our RTX 4090 review, DLSS 3 has two components — the normal super-resolution you see in tools like FSR and DLSS, and frame generation. DLSS 3 can generate a new frame every other frame without rendering a single pixel. In theory, this means the ability to double the number of frames per second, even more than what you get with traditional upscaling.

We don’t yet have concrete details on FSR 3.0 from AMD, so it’s impossible to say whether Team Red has the same approach. However, performance claims combined with the inclusion of frame generation suggest that FSR 3.0 will operate in a similar manner.

The missing piece is whether FSR 3.0 will use AI. DLSS 3 depends on the AI ​​accelerators inside the RTX 4090, which allow the GPU to generate new frames without loads of artifacts. The RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT now include AI accelerators, suggesting that FSR 3.0 could take advantage of them. However, AMD is still silent on this detail.

When asked about FSR 3.0 and its potential use of artificial intelligence by Jarred Walton of Tom’s Hardware, AMD executives simply replied, “Current versions of FSR do not use machine learning.”

We currently have more questions than answers about FSR 3.0, but it’s clear that AMD intends to give the fight back to Nvidia. DLSS 3 marked a big change where Nvidia re-established an advantage over AMD in upscaling technology, but FSR 3.0 seems positioned to balance those scales. It is difficult to say anything concrete now.

AMD says FSR 3.0 will arrive in 2023, but hasn’t given a release date after that point. FSR 2.0 is still relatively new, and despite its rapid adoption, the technology has yet to make its way into every game. Recently published Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, for example, it uses FSR 1.0 instead of the updated version.

Meanwhile, AMD has announced that FSR 2.2 is available, a release Forza Horizon 5 Soon. The company did not specify the exact date. FSR 2.2 is said to bring improvements in weather artifacts, but it looks more like an image quality update to FSR 2.0 than a completely new version.
