The student involved in the incident is reportedly an adult according to the exchange in the post. Many outraged netizens called her actions a “direct attack” on the teacher and expressed concern about the treatment of teachers at Antioch High School. Some discussed possible ways to support instructors while limiting phone use in the classroom. Others raised questions about whether the student was allowed to bring pepper spray to school and whether she was mature enough to use it responsibly.

Although not deadly, pepper spray can be harmful. It is sold as a self-defense spray and contains capsaicin, an inflammatory compound found in chili peppers, in oil form. According to Medical News Today, capsaicin can cause burning, painful, and watery eyes, as well as temporary blindness, shortness of breath, blistering or burning of the skin, dizziness, and loss of consciousness.
