The old adage “better late than never” has never applied so zealously – the iPhone 12 line has arrived, after missing its usual launch window at Apple’s September event. But it was definitely worth the wait, as the iPhone 12 takes Apple’s celebrated phone line-up to new heights, complete with an all-new processor, improved camera and some great new color variants. But of all the iPhones in the parade, the iPhone 12 Pro stands out. Part of iPhone’s powerful Pro line, but not as big as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the iPhone 12 Pro will be the powerful iPhone of choice for many.
But this isn’t the first year we’ve seen the iPhone Pro — last year saw the debut of the iPhone 11 Pro, and many will question whether this year’s model is a big enough step up from the previous one. If you’re weighing your options, is a brand new iPhone worth buying instead of the savings you can find on the older iPhone 11 Pro? Or, if you already have an iPhone 11 Pro, should you upgrade right now? We’ve compared the two phones side-by-side so you know if the new iPhone is worth the upgrade.

Apple tends to refresh the look of the iPhone every few years, and it’s right on schedule to shake things up this year. The iPhone 12 Pro isn’t a big difference from the iPhone 11 Pro, but it’s enough of a change that we finally feel like we’re looking at a different device than the aging iPhone X design we’ve been seeing for years. The separating notch is finally reduced and the edges are smoothed. It’s reminiscent of the classic iPhone 4 and we love it. The iPhone 11 Pro is still a good-looking device, but the iPhone 12 Pro wins points simply because it’s different.
So what about screens? The iPhone 12 Pro’s screen is larger than the iPhone 11 Pro’s, but thanks to similar resolutions, the sharpness between them is almost the same. Since both are equipped with OLED panels, both have similarly stunning displays. Both phones have a stainless steel frame, covered with glass, and both have an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. However, the iPhone 12 Pro has a slight advantage with the new Ceramic Guard glass.
With the edge in design and durability, the iPhone 12 Pro wins this round.

Performance, battery life and charging
Julian Chokkattu/Digital Trends
iPhones are always blindingly fast, and this new generation is no different. The star of the show is undoubtedly the Apple A14 Bionic processor located inside the phone’s case. We first saw this chip in the new iPad Air 4 and it is likely to be among the fastest processors of this generation. However, the iPhone 11 Pro is not negligible, and the A13 Bionic processor will not show its age for a long time. It’ll still handle whatever you throw at it — though the A14 Bionic will have an edge.
Our concerns about the iPhone 12 Pro’s smaller battery proved to be largely unfounded, as Apple’s new iPhone provides easy all-day power consumption. On heavy usage days, the battery will drop into low power mode for the rest of the day, but that’s not really worth worrying about. We think there’s less wiggle room than you’d get with the iPhone 11 Pro’s all-day battery life, but it’s not worth choosing one over the other. You’ll enjoy the same decent 18W fast charging and Qi wireless charging on both iPhones, but note that the new iPhone doesn’t come with a charging pad.
Since the iPhone 12 Pro’s battery proved to be solid, we’re now changing this category to give the win to the iPhone 12 Pro’s more powerful hardware. It’s simply the most powerful iPhone in the world and it deserves to be celebrated.

Cameras

iPhone has traditionally had some of the best camera phones available, and the iPhone 12 Pro is no different. The iPhone 11 Pro set a new high standard for smartphone photography when it launched, and its three 12-megapixel lenses take incredible photos. Apple stepped it up even further by adding software like Smart HDR, leading to a camera that eventually took the throne as the best camera phone.
The iPhone 12 Pro uses the same triple-lens camera system and takes it even further, adding an improved telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and a LiDAR scanner. The wide lens has a wider aperture than the iPhone 11 Pro, which lets in more light and significantly boosts night mode. The ultra-wide lens can also take advantage of night mode, and while it’s not as good as the main lens, it’s still a great addition. It’s so good that we think it’s close to the Google Pixel 5 for low-light photos.
Both Pro iPhones will be able to record video at similar levels, including 4K video at 60 frames per second, but the iPhone 12 Pro has the edge with the addition of a low-light video mode, Dolby Vision and HDR. The iPhone 11 Pro still has an excellent camera, but the iPhone 12 Pro is another step forward.

Software and updates
Corey Gaskin / Digital Trends
Both of these titans run Apple’s latest iOS 14 and it’s great software that adds a lot of new tricks, including support for widgets on the home screen. Since Apple is in charge, both will probably get updates around the same time. Normally, we’d give the newer phone a slight edge when it comes to update longevity, but Apple supports the iPhone for so long that you can upgrade before either phone runs out of updates. It’s a dead tie.

Special features

iPhones are not generally known for their special features, as Apple prefers to perfect new features before releasing them. However, you’ll still find a decent array of features on both, including the artificial intelligence (AI) assistant Siri and her shortcuts, Animojis and Memojis with Face ID, and Face ID itself. The new MagSafe system is also a bonus for the new iPhone lineup, but it hardly seems like a killer feature at this stage.
However, the iPhone 12 Pro really pushes it to the next level with the addition of 5G. The next generation of cellular networks will be key to the longevity of smartphones in the coming years, and phones without them will seem awfully slow by comparison. The addition of 5G means the iPhone 12 Pro wins here.
Winner: iPhone 12 Pro
Price and availability
The iPhone 12 Pro is available now, with prices starting at $999. Since it’s an iPhone, it will work on almost any network and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a phone store that doesn’t sell it.
Since the launch of the iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 11 Pro has now been discontinued. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find it. As with the new iPhone, the iPhone 11 Pro was available almost everywhere, and some retailers will still have stock.
Overall winner: iPhone 12 Pro
If you’re looking for a new, high-end iPhone, then there’s only one choice: the iPhone 12 Pro. As you might expect, Apple’s new iPhone beats the iPhone 11 Pro, improving in most areas and putting on something of a clinic.
But if you’re already using the iPhone 11 Pro, there’s not really much to upgrade here. Sure, the iPhone 12 Pro is more powerful and probably has a more capable camera — but your iPhone 11 Pro is still very powerful and already has an amazing camera. Is it really worth the effort to upgrade when you can wait for the iPhone 13 or even the iPhone 14?
But even if you’re not going to upgrade, it’s clear that the new iPhone boss is in town — the iPhone 12 Pro.
