Several residents of Millau, in Aveyron, had an unpleasant surprise in their letterbox. After speaking out the day after deconfinement on May 11, around a hundred activists marched to protest the government’s handling of the health crisis. They renewed the action on May 22 at the city market.
And a few of them, so that they were hidden and not subjected to any control or warning, were fined for “prohibition of assembly on a public road in an area where a state of emergency has been declared” in the amount of 135 euros, according to research by Numérama.

“We had almost all masks or scarves and that’s in line with the safety gaps,” one of them told the site specializing in digital information, which said 36 May 11 fines had been handed out in a week, with more to come. 12 others for the rally held ten days later.
Identified by surveillance video, recognized on the spot
What surprised the activists was the way the police were able to identify them, knowing they were hidden and for some had never been checked before in Aveyron. Another says it was simply his market.

How could they recognize us even though we were hidden almost all the time, and it was even difficult for us to recognize us?”, asked Numéram. “This type of punishment for political demonstrations has never been seen, that we don’t know who the agents verbalisateurs are, nor how they work,” Julien Brel, a lawyer from Toulouse who was captured by the militants, alarmed at the site.
