VLC Player, a popular open source media player operated by VideonLAN, has picked up a lot of powerful features since it was first introduced, and there will be more in the future. At CES 2019, the app’s developers announced plans to add support for Apple’s AirPlay feature, allowing consumers to stream videos and other content from their iPhone and Android devices to Apple TV.

While not giving an exact date when AirPlay support will officially be added, VLC lead developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf tells Variety that it will be coming “within a month.” In a subsequent interview with The Verge, VLC also mentions that it might come in an upcoming update, which still doesn’t have a release date.

“Just like with Chromecast, we intend to support AirPlay on any platform. No release date yet at all. We’d like it to be part of VLC 4, which is the next major release we’re currently working on. We will inform you in advance when we set the date”, they said from VLC.

Support for AirPlay isn’t the only news that VLC announced at CES 2019. The app has been downloaded around 3 billion times, and it’s getting several new features and could soon expand to other platforms. VentureBeat reports that VLC player could be coming to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Roku. In addition, there are plans to improve HDR video playback, video quality and scaling support on all major VLC platforms with the upcoming version 4.0 update. VR support will also be improved, so users can watch traditional movies in a virtual environment when wearing the headset.

Last year, VLC added support for Chromecast with version 3.0 “Vetinari”, an upgrade, allowing consumers to stream video and audio files from a computer to a TV. Previous upgrades have also introduced notable features, including Dropbox support, improved library layouts for TV shows and audio files, and multi-touch gestures. AirPlay support would top it all off and make it easy to stream content to a big-screen TV, without the need to download additional apps or purchase additional hardware.
