Debra Shelden, known as one of the Beatrice Six, is linked to the murder of 68-year-old Helen Wilson. They then interviewed Debra for the first time on March 24, 1989. Burdette and Beatrice Police Sergeant Ralph Stevens conducted the interview. According to the report prepared by Ralph, Debra said her husband told her that she had received a letter from Taylor admitting her involvement in the murder.
Ralph’s report said that Debra Shelden said she had not read the letter and that White may have been mentioned in the letter. However, Searcey’s interview report quotes her as saying that she had read the letter and that it stated that Taylor and White had committed the murder.
Cliff Shelden gave taped testimony on April 12, 1989, after three and a half hours of questioning, stating that he had received a letter from Taylor three to four months after the murder in which Taylor admitted to involvement in the crime with Winslow and White. . Cliff Shelden also testified that Winslow informed him about Wilson’s murder and that Taylor, White, Winslow, and Debra Shelden were present.
Searcey and another deputy questioned Debra Shelden a second time on April 13, 1989. She indicated that she was present at Wilson’s murder with Taylor, White, and Winslow in a recorded portion of their interview. She claimed that she was watching her attack when White pushed her, knocking her unconscious and causing her to bleed.
Debra Shelden was arrested for the murder shortly after the interview. On April 14, 1989, she was interviewed for the third time and said that Dean was also present at Wilson’s murder.
On April 24, Debra Shelden pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree murder. She was given 10 years in prison. She served four and a half years in prison before being released again.
