The deaths of four University of Idaho students in November 2022 shocked the country, as their off-campus residence quickly became a bloody crime scene. One of the victims’ surviving roommates, Bethany Funke, is currently in the news after Bryan Kohberger’s defense team said she can clear her name.
One of the two surviving housemates from the random night is Bethany. Before her death, she shared a house with students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Xana Kernodle. Kohberger’s defense team argued in April 2023 that Bethany could expunge her record because she had “information material for the allegations against Mr. Kohberger,” which could be “exculpatory” for him, according to E! News.
“Ms. Funke’s information is exclusive to her experiences and cannot be provided by another witness,” the investigator said, adding that “it is necessary to call this witness because the witness’s testimony is material and necessary to this case.” the press release said. However, Bethany’s attorney disputed the investigators’ allegations, arguing that there was no justification for the defense to request a subpoena for the preliminary hearing scheduled for June 28, 2023.
“These statements are conclusive,” the attorney for the surviving victim wrote in a motion opposing the subpoena. “There is no further information on the details of the content of the testimony, its materiality or the alleged exculpatory information of Ms. Funke or why it would be important in a preliminary hearing.”
The motion also noted that there is no authority to call Nevada witnesses to the hearing in Idaho. “The preliminary hearing is not intended to become a mini-trial due to its limited purpose of determining probable cause,” Bethany’s attorney added in the motion.
Bethany lived on the first floor with fellow survivor Dylan Mortenson, the person who allegedly came face to face with the killer on the night of the attack. After the murders, Mortensen and surviving tenant Bethany Funke got the same tattoos as a tribute to the victims.

Detlef later served in the German army. He came to the United States in 1964 where he lived in Elko, Nevada. He met his wife Ina and they were married in 1966. They moved to Carson City, Nevada in 1975.
Detlef had a passion for fishing, hunting, and gardening. He was very proud to live in the United States and was granted US citizenship. Detlef is survived by three children: Mark (Chantalle), Kai (Wendy) and Kim. One of them is Bethany’s father and mother.
