Born to beat: Toyota’s ‘indestructible’ Hilux is all new, won’t stay shiny for long

Toyota has unveiled the long-awaited 2016 Hilux, a midsize pickup that is sold in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Completely new from bumper to bumper, the Hilux has a much more modern look that is in line with Toyota’s latest design language. Most of the upgrades are up front, where the truck is outfitted with stretched headlights, a muscular bumper, and a three-slat grille. Sculpted fenders and bed sides partially hide the Hilux’s utilitarian roots.

The lineup consists of three body styles: single cab, extra cab, and crew cab. The cab chassis will be introduced a little later in the production run.

The Hilux follows the truck industry’s gradual shift toward more car-like interiors. The instrument panel features a configurable TFT display, steering is operated via an ergonomic three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, and a tall yellow trim with a large touchscreen running the latest generation of Toyota’s infotainment system can be ordered.

Power for the Hilux comes from a new 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that produces 174 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 331 pound-feet of torque from 1,600 to 2,400 rpm. The turbo four sends power to all four wheels through a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic unit.

Buyers who don’t need as much torque will be able to order the truck with a 2.4-liter turbodiesel that makes 160 ponies and 295 pound-feet of torque, and at least a gasoline engine will be offered. However, the final specifications will vary from market to market.

After prospective Hilux owners select their engine, they will be asked to select one of three suspension settings called Standard, Heavy, and Comfort. Standard is designed for regular Hilux owners who drive on a wide variety of roads, Heavy Duty is for owners who often drive their truck on rough roads and tow it regularly, while Comfort is for those who inexplicably never drive their truck off the beaten track.

Pricing information hasn’t been released yet, but it’s of limited interest to us as the Hilux won’t be making its way to our shores. However, if you live in Australia, Asia, Russia, Europe, Africa, or Latin America—in short, anywhere outside of the United States—the new Hilux is expected to hit showrooms before the end of the year.
