Britain’s last booze cruisers stock up in case of a No Deal Brexit this Friday with Calais trade soaring by 50%

BRITAIN’S last booze cruisers were seen stocking up on French alcohol in case of a No Deal Brexit this Friday – with business in Calais soaring by 50 per cent.

Under single market rules currently in place there are no limits on what individuals can buy and take with them when they travel between EU countries as long as it’s for personal consumption.

But fears of a No Deal Brexit at the end of this week appear to have triggered a mass dash across the Channel, as photos show Brits piling crates of beer and wine boxes into their car boots.

On Monday night a Remainer plot to stop a No Deal Brexit passed in law, making the unregulated exit highly unlikely.

But if a No Deal were to go ahead Brits would only be permitted only six bottles of wine, 16 litres of beer and one litre of spirits to be brought into the UK.

The “booze cruise” was at its height in the 90s, when alcohol was much cheaper in France than in England.

Its popularity has waned over the past two decades, but uncertainty around Brexit has led to a surge in Brits heading to Calais to pick up booze, with businesses reporting a 50 per cent boom in business, the MailOnline reports.

It comes after Brits were dubbed “hamster hoarders” for stockpiling everything from underwear to Calpol in fear of a No Deal.

While supermarket prices have also risen as one in ten Brits stockpiled food, with the price of a tinned meal rising by six per cent since this time last year.

Prime Minister Theresa May has asked the EU to delay Brexit until June 30 to prevent a No Deal departure, with a crunch EU summit due to take place tonight to decide on the request.
