His father is Tze Kwong Lo/Tony Lo and his mother is Sau Lin. His father was born as the fifth child in Hong Kong on December 16, 1957. Tony grew up with seven brothers and three sisters. They lived in a 3-room wooden shack located in a train station at the end of a line in Hong Kong.
Growing up, Tony was nicknamed “Rib” Kwong, a joking comment about how skinny he was, but the reality was that he and his family couldn’t afford food. After leaving school when he was 13, he found work in a kitchen. He loved cooking because it was an opportunity to have easy access to food.
In 1982, Buda’s father immigrated to Australia with his older brother, and it was then that he met and fell in love with Buda’s mother-to-be. They got married in Cairns. His parents then opened a small take-away in Port Douglas and then a restaurant called the Jade Inn, which has been an institution for tourists and locals alike for the past 30 years, raising him and his older brother.
Tony inspired Buda to become a chef. His passion for cooking fueled Buddha’s obsession with food. Studying with him in the kitchen from the age of 12, he taught him all the important cooking basics and showed him how hard work and diligence pay off.
Unfortunately, Buddha lost his father to stage four liver cancer. This affected him deeply because his father was his role model.
