Caitlin Atwater is the daughter of Kathleen Peterson and her ex-husband Fred Atwater. Both parents attended Duke University and that is where their paths first crossed. Later, her parents moved to Maryland, where she was born. She remembered Kathleen as a doting mother who, despite her successful career at Nortel and as a prominent member of Durham society and a benefactor of the arts, devoted time to her.
At first, Caitlin didn’t believe her stepfather Michael Peterson could kill her mother. She remembered their relationship as pleasant. She testified: “My mother and Mike were in a loving relationship and there’s no way either of us wanted to hurt the other.”
She turned on him after seeing her mother’s autopsy photos and learning about her stepfather’s relationship with men. She also filed and then in 2008 was awarded $25 million in a lawsuit she filed against her former stepfather. Although she did not get the money, she wanted him not to benefit in any way.
His mother allegedly met Michael because she was friends with Margaret and Martha, Michael’s adopted daughters and his first wife, Patricia. “They all sat me down and said, ‘Would you like Martha and Margaret to come live with you?’ And immediately I thought, ‘Let me sleep over permanently!'” Caitlin told NBC.
Before their mother’s death, Caitlin, Kathleen, and Kathleen’s mother Veronica flew to Paris to celebrate: Caitlin’s eighteenth birthday and Veronica’s eightieth. “I held on to that trip so tightly. I remember it so vividly,” she told the newspaper.

Caitlin added: “When those moments finally come, you’ve already been through a lot emotionally, yes, yes, it’s still hard, but at least you know why it’s hard.”
Caitlin was constantly afraid of losing her relationship with her mother. “When your memories start to fade, and they started to fade, it’s hard,” she says. But she also makes her “live like I think she would if she were here with me.”
Even today, Caitlin tries to remain her mother’s daughter, guided by the principles Kathleen lived by, even as her memories of her mother are fading.
As indy week Caitlin showed only a photo of her mother at her house. In the picture, Caitlin, who was 5 years old at the time, is sitting on her mother’s lap on top of a mountain.
“I tried to be the person that I think I would be if she was here,” says Caitlin. “And I hope that’s part of her legacy that she can pass on to my children.”
