Call of Duty: Warzone’s sniper nerf is a much-needed change

In the past few months, Call of Duty: Warzone has undergone a significant number of changes — most of which implement much-needed quality-of-life improvements. For example, the terrifying gas mask animation will no longer interrupt your final moments of a particular match, and the Ghost perk has finally been denied. As part of the April 2022 Season 3 update, Raven Software has nerfed many of the best snipers in the game, eliminating the ability to achieve single-hit headshot eliminations within certain distances.

While this change might seem strange at first, it’s certainly a welcome addition. Not only does it add a more viable weapon to the combo, but it also reduces your chances of being knocked down without time to react. The new changes are actually a little more complicated than you might expect, but that’s great news for War zone overall.

Previously, light snipers like the Kar98k, SP-R 208 and Swiss K31 dominated War zone target, allowing players to quickly swoop in and deliver a one-shot headshot kill. Of course, it takes quite a bit of skill to pull this off, but considering how it allows you to instantly destroy your opponents in one hit, it leaves anyone on the other side at a disadvantage. All it took was one well-timed shot to take someone down instantly, which was hard to counter, especially since these snipers offer Rapid Aiming (ADS).

After the Season 3 update, many top snipers are achieving one-hit eliminations within certain ranges, allowing heavier guns to shine without completely destroying the viability of weapons like the Kar98k, SP-R, or Swiss.

Courtesy of Call of Duty YouTuber JGOD, the chart above shows the new one-hit kill potentials for the best snipers in the game, with each column representing 10 meters. For example, Modern warfare Kar98k can now kill in one hit within 52 meters or so. Engagements outside of that range now require an additional headshot to knock the player down. Likewise, the Pelington 703 can now only kill with one hit within 70 meters, although this is significantly better than most other fast snipers in the game.

Here is an overview of the max damage ranges for snipers based on JGOD’s map.

Weapon Maximum damage range Kill shots within maximum damage range
Kar98k (Modern Warfare) 52 meters One
SP-R 208 45 meters One
Pellington 703 70 meters One
Swiss K31 45 meters One
Type 99 55 meters One
Kar98k (Vanguard) 47 meters One
LW3 – Tundra 45 meters One
HDR Infinity One
AX-50 Infinity One
ZRG 20mm Infinity One
3-line rifle Infinity One
Gorenka anti-tank rifle Infinity One
Rytec AMR 98 meters Two
Dragunov 35 meters Three
M82 75 meters Two

You’ll notice that a few of the heavier snipers didn’t get the nerf. These are guns like HDR, AX-50 and ZRG 20mm. This is a big deal, as it finally gives players a reason to use this weapon, which was previously surpassed by Kar98k and Swiss. From a balancing perspective, this makes a lot more sense, offering plenty of pros and cons across a multitude of options. It stands to reason that a bulky sniper like the HDR deals more damage than a light rifle like the SP-R 208. This balancing change has been a long time coming, pushing the target to become more versatile and diverse.

The beauty of this update is that it doesn’t make light snipers obsolete. If you’re within maximum damage range, you can still get one-hit kills — it’ll just be harder to do. For those who enjoy playing on Rebirth Island, a smaller map more suited to close range combat, you’ll find Kar98k, Swiss, and SP-R are still completely viable. Meanwhile, those playing on Caldera will still be able to secure long-range eliminations with heavier snipers, making it a win-win for many players.

New sniper target

Now that the sniper target has changed significantly, you’ll probably need to revisit your custom loads to replace them with other rifles from Season 3. The best sniper now is the ZRG 20 mm, a Cold war a rifle that still has relatively decent ADS speeds, high bullet velocity, clear optics, and the ability to one-hit enemies at any range. Despite this, the ZRG does not appear to be overpowering as it is a less mobile weapon that has a small ammunition capacity of six rounds. However, this sniper seems balanced compared to Kar98k and Swiss because it is slower but more powerful.

In addition, the Pelington 703 stands out as a fair medium weapon that can eliminate enemies with a single shot at a distance of up to 70 meters. On Caldera this may not be as effective, but given that it can be adjusted to offer competitive ADS speeds, Pelington now works well on Rebirth Island.
