Can I use an Intel Arc GPU with AMD Ryzen?

Yes, yes, you can. It might seem like an incident mass hysteria, the red and blue teams play together that way, but players have been using Intel CPUs with AMD GPUs for years, so the fact that the other way around works just as well isn’t too surprising. However, there are some caveats. Can you use an Intel Arc GPU with AMD Ryzen: yes, but you have to use a real CPU.

Which AMD CPUs can you use with Intel Arc GPUs?

In reality, any AMD CPU should work with Intel Arc GPUs, as there are no lock-in or core compatibility issues that mean only certain CPUs work with new Intel cards. On that note, Intel has made a big deal about how Arc Alchemist cards benefit from Resizable BAR, a feature only available on Ryzen 3000 and newer CPUs.

With that in mind, if you’re interested in an Intel Arc graphics card, you should only buy one if you have a CPU that supports ReBAR. In the case of AMD CPUs, these are Ryzen 3000, 4000, 5000 or the latest Ryzen 7000 CPUs.

This isn’t just a way for Intel to limit the potential market for AMD CPU owners — as if it wants to sell fewer GPUs. In fact, it also recommends that only Intel’s 10th generation and newer CPUs also use Arc GPUs, since, like the Ryzen 3000, it’s the oldest generation of Intel CPUs where ReBAR is supported. Without it, the new Arc GPUs won’t perform nearly as well as they should.

Why does Arc GPU need ReBaR?

Variable size BAR is a feature in modern graphics introduced by Nvidia as a counter to AMD’s implementation of smart access memory — which is essentially the same feature. ReBAR effectively gives the CPU access to the entire GPU memory as and when it needs it, instead of smaller chunks of it. This reduces memory bottlenecks and allows the CPU and GPU to run at peak performance, improving real-world performance.

The result for Nvidia and AMD graphics cards is a slight increase in performance, and the same is true for Intel’s Arc cards. However, the difference is quite large, enough that in our A770 review we agreed with Intel that ReBAR is necessary if you intend to play games on an Arc GPU.

The effect of turning on ReBAR isn’t consistent across games, and you certainly aren’t need to run games, but given how competitive the new Arc GPU is with Nvidia and AMD’s best mid-range options, it’s worth including to get the most out of the new cards — and if you can’t, you might be better off with one of the alternatives.
