Backwards compatibility has been an issue for Sony with the PlayStation 3 generation on the PS4. Thankfully that was fixed with the move from PS4 to PS5, but it wasn’t the only new hardware Sony released. PlayStation VR2 is, as the name suggests, the second generation of PlayStation’s dedicated virtual reality headset. Despite borrowing many designs and features from other popular headsets, like the Meta Quest 2, the PSVR2 is designed to work only with your PS5. You might assume that this new, more powerful headset will be compatible with all original PSVR titles, but that might not be a safe bet. If you have a library of original PSVR games that you want to play on PSVR2, here’s what you need to know.
Is PSVR2 backwards compatible with PSVR?
No, Sony confirmed before the release of PSVR2 that it would not be able to play any of its PSVR games, saying that it was impossible due to the difference in power between the two headsets and technical differences. Whatever the reason, it was a huge disappointment for those who supported the PSVR and amassed a library of titles they wanted to put on display.
However, there is good news. While you can’t use your PSVR games on PSVR2, some developers will offer free upgrades and cross-buy options for certain titles.
How cross buying works

Cross-buying is a system where you get a “free” version of a game you already bought that has a PSVR2 version available. A similar system was implemented with the PS3 and Vita, where buying a copy for one system also gets you a version for the other.
If you own a PSVR game, digitally or physically, that supports cross-buying, once you launch it on your PS5, you’ll be notified that you have the option to download a new version. Just do that and you’ll be ready to use PSVR2.
The downside is that only games the developers have created a dedicated PSVR2 version of can qualify for cross-buying, and even then it’s up to the individual developer to offer a free upgrade. Unfortunately, there’s no really easy way to see which games do or don’t offer cross-buys. Fortunately, we’ve done the work for you and listed them all here.
