Can YOU tell if it’s real? Bizarre optical illusion featuring a wind turbine blade has people baffled

INTERNET users are baffled by an image of a 242ft wind turbine blade in Hull, which many insist has been photoshopped.

Although people claim it looks tampered with, the gigantic 25-tonne object was standing in the center of town earlier this year, and experts have now explained why it looks fake.

The latest "optical illusion" to confuse internet users is this art installation called Blade that was in Hull that many say looks photoshopped.

The reason the public art, known as Blade, looks fake is actually a “trick of the light.”

The research, which was published in the scientific journal i-Perception, showed that the illusion is caused by the way light reflects off a long blade, effectively changing the way the human eye processes the shape of a blade. object.

Experts from the University of Lincoln said that light hitting the blade from above creates a shadow, making it appear cylindrical and appears to be lit from the side.

The researchers found that the confusion was due to the way light bounces off the leaf, which causes the brain to think that something seems out of place.

They claim that it plays on “preconceived notions people have about how objects light up in natural settings” and tricks the human eye into thinking something is wrong with the image.

Because of this, it seems to many people that the object is out of place and as if it is placed in the background.

Science Daily reported how the researchers tested their theory and created two virtual versions of a cylindrical C-shaped profile and a more complex S-shaped profile.

Then they set each one on fire from the top and sides.

When the S shape was lit from above and the C shape was lit from the front, they both looked cylindrical.

Professor of Vision Sciences George Mather, from the University of Lincoln School of Psychology, said: “I have seen images of the facility in the media and at first glance the photos looked like clumsy fakes.

“There seemed to be something else at work, at least to my eyes as a vision scientist.

“The blade appeared to be a cylindrical object, strangely out of the local environment, lit differently, as if digitized, but really there.

“We had an idea of what this print conveyed: light and shadow on the sheet that contrasted sharply with its surroundings. Computer-generated imagery was one way to test the idea.”
