ChatGPT has taken Microsoft Bing from meme to mainstream with a packed waitlist

There has been a mad rush to sign up for Microsoft’s new Bing search powered by ChatGPT, which may have signaled a turnaround for a search engine that seemed to be forever in second place, given Google’s overwhelming dominance. More than a million people have requested early access to Bing’s search powered by ChatGPT.

You may already know the reason for this sudden interest. The new Bing has AI superpowers that allow it to talk like a human while accessing the Internet’s vast store of knowledge. In a few short months, we’ve all realized how important this is, thanks to the game-changing AI goodness of Dall-E and ChatGPT, among others.

As interest in ChatGPT grew, Microsoft entered into an agreement with OpenAI to use its advanced technology in Bing. While ChatGPT is based on GPT-3.5 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer version 3.5), Bing uses a more advanced model that runs much faster and, unlike ChatGPT, can access current information.

With such power, it’s no wonder that over a million people have signed up to use it. Microsoft corporate vice president Yusuf Mehdi recently shared the news twitter and invited more people to join the waiting list.

Given Microsoft’s massive infrastructure, powered by Azure cloud computing, rolling out to over a million people shouldn’t be a problem. Competition is coming, however, as Google is now slowly introducing the rival Bard AI to trusted testers.

While Microsoft won’t move as fast as OpenAI, since it has more to lose if the new Bing goes off the rails, overwhelming demand could speed up the rollout of the new Bing. A faster rollout would allow Microsoft to capitalize on the resurgence of interest before Google’s own AI chat, Bard, becomes widespread.

There are also plenty of ChatGPT alternatives floating around as well. None of these are integrated into search yet, but other browsers, such as Opera, are already looking at exploiting AI.
