Growing up, Cody Hawken never felt happy. “All my life I was sad,” he said. Even before finding the drugs, he admitted that he was just a “sad person” who didn’t feel accepted and didn’t belong anywhere. So when he found drugs, he connected him with people he thought were his friends at the time.
“I never really pictured life,” Cody said. He thought that he would never live to be 18 years old. But then he turned 18 and 21, and life went on. So, realizing that this was not what he wanted, stagnating, destroying their relationship and his life, he decided to seek help. He then traveled from his home state of Nevada to Massachusetts to seek addiction treatment at AA Recovery and Rehab.
“When I got to the end of my rope, I came here about two and a half years ago and spent my last $400 on a plane ticket here, and I had $19 when I landed at Logan airport,” he recalled. “Just a broken, broken, hopeless addict.”
Fortunately, after a few months of treatment, Cody began to notice a change. “The first thought in my head wasn’t ‘I’m not good enough,'” he said. He also met Mikayla during his sobriety journey (in December 2020). He then he too was sober for a year.
“The man who walked into my life and immediately showed me what true love looks like. He made me believe in true true love, but also to believe in myself. He couldn’t have asked for a better partner,” Mikayla praised.
After nearly a year of dating, Cody and Mikayla got engaged on November 20, 2021. “I got down on one knee and proposed. I can’t wait to spend my life with her. She was the best partner and I couldn’t have asked for a better woman to be there for me through my struggles and successes,” Cody later shared the happy news on his Instagram.
Now, after two years of engagement, the lovebirds finally tied the knot on July 1, 2023. The duo tied the knot in an outdoor ceremony overlooking the ocean.
