Common Google Pixel Buds Pro problems and how to solve them

Looking for the perfect set of wireless headphones for your family of Android devices? You could do worse than the Google Pixel Buds Pro.

Packed with multiple ear tips for any shape of canal, the Buds Pro sound fantastic (as noted in our full Pixel Buds Pro review), fit comfortably, offer noise cancellation (finally!), and have the ability to connect to multiple Bluetooth devices at once. However, like all things related to technology, they are not completely fail-safe.

What do you do when your Pixel headphones stop charging? And what if the sound suddenly drops out? Rest assured, we have years of A/V experience to back you up. Here’s a list of some of the most common Pixel Headphone Pro issues and how to fix them.

No sound

Whether the culprit is a finicky Bluetooth connection (which should be minimal with these headphones) or a mismatched handshake between your Pixel Bud’s touch controls and the music streaming app, there are a few reasons why you might not be hearing sound from your headphones.

But fear not: Here are some troubleshooting tips and some quick fixes you can try.

Step 1: First off the troubleshooting end, let’s check the obvious: go ahead and confirm that your Pixel headphones and charging case are charged, turned on, and have Bluetooth enabled on whatever main device you’re currently connected to.

Step 2: Touch one earpiece (play/pause command). If nothing happens, there’s a chance that whatever app or media streaming platform you’re using won’t have seamless compatibility with your Pixel Headphones Pro.

In these cases, you may need to manually play and pause the content from the app itself. This should be rare.

Step 3: Make sure you’re running the latest firmware across the entire hardware and software spectrum. This means you’ll want everything from your phone/tablet and its music streaming apps to the Pixel Buds app itself updated.

Here’s how to update your Pixel Headphones Pro.

Step 4: If Bluetooth is enabled on your main device, try turning it off and then on again. You can also try to “forget” your Pixel Buds Pro from your device and then add them again.

Step 5: In some cases, the accumulation of dirt and other debris can interfere with audio performance. Use a dry, lint-free cloth and adhesive putty (where applicable) to remove any residue, then see if a little cleaning has made a difference.

Pairing problems

The Pixel Buds Pro can pair with a number of major devices within and outside the Android family, but actually connecting the earbuds to Bluetooth equipment can sometimes be a bit of a hassle.

If you’re having trouble pairing with your Pixel Buds Pro, here are a few things you can try.

Step 1: Whether you’re pairing with Android, iOS, or some other type of Bluetooth-enabled device, first make sure your Pixel Buds Pro are in pairing mode.

To do this, place the Pixel headphones in the charging case, then press and hold Pairing button on the back of the case. Once the status light starts pulsing white, your headphones have officially entered pairing mode.

Step 2: If you’re using an Android device running Android 6.0 or later, you should receive a pop-up notification on your phone or tablet letting you know that your Pixel headphones are trying to connect. Select the notification and follow the quick instructions to connect the headphones.

You can also go to your phone Bluetooth settings to add Pixel headphones by selecting Pair the new device.

Step 3: For non-Android devices, look at your hardware Bluetooth menu and find your Pixel headphones below My devices tab. Once you select them, they should start pairing.

Step 4: If not, try to “forget” and re-add the Pixel Buds Pro to your host device.

After removing the Pixel Buds Pro from the device log, place the Pixel Buds in the charging case, leave the top open, and then connect the case to a power source.

Step 5: Hold the button on the back of the case for about 30 seconds. When the status light stops flashing, let go and the Buds Pro case indicator should start flashing white and orange, which means your Buds are fully reset. This will reset your Pixel Buds Pro to factory settings.

Step 6: When the light flashes white, it means the reset is complete and you can try the pairing process again.

Charging problems

Have you noticed that your Pixel headphones won’t charge when you put them in the charging case? This is where proper cleaning and maintenance of your earbuds and charging case becomes critical to getting the optimal amount of power from your box to the Buds Pro.

Step 1: Clean the charging contacts of the Buds Pro and the inside of the charging case with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Step 2: Make sure the earphones are firmly placed in the charging case. To confirm a proper A-to-B connection, you should see the headphone status light blink after each extension has been successfully connected.

Opening and closing the charging case is another good way to adjust each bud to the correct charging position.

Factory reset when all else fails

Regardless of the error or failure of your Buds Pro and/or main device, a hard reset of the Pixel Buds Pro will return the earbuds to their out-of-the-box status, with all connections from the Buds to your Bluetooth devices eliminated and all default settings restored.

Step 1: Follow our detailed explanation on how to properly factory reset your Pixel Buds Pro (which we covered briefly in the No Sound section of this article).

Step 2: It also won’t hurt to hard reset your main device. Turn off your phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer completely, wait about 10 or 15 seconds, and then turn it back on.
