TWO men have been arrested after vile Sheffield Wednesday fans turned up to mock Sunderland with a tragic photo of Bradley Lowery.

Photos emerged yesterday of two men laughing while one held a photo of a young man who tragically died of cancer in 2017.

The club and police said at the time they were investigating the incident and apologized to Sunderland fans and Bradley’s loved ones.

The boy’s mother yesterday strongly condemned the couple, calling them “low lives”.

Officers have now revealed that arrests have been made in connection with their investigation, with two men being held in custody overnight.

The six-year-old Sunderland lover formed a close bond with Jermain Defoe during the England international’s time at the club.

The youngster won the hearts of Britons on and off the pitch, having battled cancer for most of his short life before losing the battle six years ago.

There was widespread outrage yesterday when photos of the two men began to circulate, with dozens calling for the pair to be banned.

South Yorkshire Police have now announced: “Officers have arrested two men in connection with an ongoing investigation into a disturbance following a football match.

“On September 29, two men were reported to have committed an act of public decency following Sheffield Wednesday’s match against Sunderland at Hillsborough.

“Police officers arrested two men aged 31 and 27 on suspicion of offending public decency. Both remain in police custody.

“We are in the early stages of our investigation and continue to urge anyone who believes they have information that can help to get in touch online, via live chat or by calling 101.”

Last night, Bradley’s mum Gemma revealed her heartbreak over the photo.

In a Facebook post, she said: “This is so sad to see – whatever happened to ‘cancer has no colour’, let alone respect for a family who lost their child to cancer?”

Bradley’s family added: “Today was not the Saturday I expected after receiving multiple calls and messages regarding the photo that has been circulating on social media.

“Durham Police visited me to check on me and they informed me and Carl that Yorkshire Police are now dealing with the situation and are taking it very seriously.

I’m so sad to see that.

“It’s understandable that people are angry, if I wasn’t so upset I would be angry.

“Bradley was and still is loved in the football community, for which I am eternally grateful, but I have to ask that everyone let the police do their jobs and deal with bad lives.”

Before the arrest, Sheffield Wednesday said on social media: “We are aware of the images circulating and have launched an urgent investigation alongside South Yorkshire Police.”

Young Bradley was a regular Sunderland mascot, holding the hand of his idol Defoe.

In June 2017, he penned an emotional tribute to his “best friend” Bradley – saying his favorite part of playing for Sunderland was getting on the pitch with the brave youngster.

Defoe said he was devastated when he discovered the brave child could only have a few weeks to live.

After Bradley’s death, social media was flooded with messages filled with blue heart emojis in support of him.

The Bradley Lowery Foundation has also been established to support other families going through similar ordeals.
