Three biomedical companies in Russia will be able to produce in an industrial process the vaccine developed by the Gamaleïa laboratory from September.

Russia assured this Monday that it will soon be able to produce hundreds of thousands of doses of the vaccine per month, compared to the new coronavirus – and “several million” early next year.

According to Russian Trade Minister Denis Mantourov, three biomedical companies will be able to industrially produce the vaccine developed by the Nikolai Gamaleïa Epidemiology and Microbiology Research Laboratory as early as September. “According to preliminary estimates, (…) we will be able to provide hundreds of thousands of vaccine doses per month starting this year, then up to several million at the beginning of next year,” he specified to the public agency TASS.

Russia, like many other countries in the world, has been working on several vaccine projects against Covid-19 for months. The one developed by the Gamaleïa Center in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence. A second prototype vaccine has been designed at the State Research Center, Vektor, Siberia, and the first doses are expected in the month of October, according to authorities.

There are currently no published studies

Russia, which has the world’s fourth highest number of infections after the United States, Brazil and India, announced in April its commitment to be among the first countries, or even the first, to create a vaccine against the virus.

The researchers, however, expressed concern about the speed of the Russians’ vaccine development, believing that some steps could be skipped to speed up the work pressure of the authorities, who compared the race to the vaccine launch by the USSR in 1957, the first artificial satellite Sputnik.
