According to a study by professor Robert Cohen, vice-president of the French Society of pediatrics, the children are less contagious than adults, reports Le Parisien.
This will probably be a relief, both for teachers that for a number of grandparents separated from their grandchildren because of the risk of contamination to the Covid-19,. Finally, the children – until the age of 15 years – would be “of very small contaminants”, in other words, very few transmitters of the virus, according to a study by professor Robert Cohen, vice-president of the French Society of pediatrics, unveiled in Paris.
Main results of the study conducted in the Île-de-France by 27 pediatricians (from 14 April to 12 may, on 605 children) : the serological tests indicate that 10% of children in the region, the most affected, have had the new coronavirus. 1,8% had a PCR test positive if they were detected during the containment. “But looking at this figure more closely, we were really surprised to see that only 0.6 per cent was contagious. In addition, in nine cases out of ten, these are the adults who contaminate the children and not the reverse,” says Robert Cohen.
More protection than adults
How do you explain these results ? Several hypotheses are discussed by the teacher : the children may have fewer receptors for the virus in their nasal mucous membranes. They could also be further protected because they have already caught it from other coronaviruses. This is what is called “cross-immunity”.

Another assumption : “they always have the runny nose and therefore would be more resistant to infections. It is as if they had had a workout. According to the professor, children can be cared for by the grandparents, provided “not too many of those in the living room and to limit the hugs.” It is also necessary, in his opinion, accelerate the return to the classroom because of the risk of isolation, loss of social ties and overexposure to screens : “This is not a coincidence if we see arrive in our offices a considerable number of children are so anxious that they develop stomach aches or head.”
