Cottage owners say: The expectation of a mountain cabin is too large

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Charly Wehrle, 69, and his hiking boots in the mud. It is raining, his white-grey hair is slowly blowing in the wind. On a hiking trail in Wank in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, he spoke in Stephanie’s voice over a huge reintalanger hut on the mountain at the foot of the Zugspitze. He sticks his silver hiking poles into the damp ground. “The consumer behavior of mountain tourists must> stop,” he scolds. Earlier, he says, the guests were less satisfied.

Charly Wehrle spent 24 summers in the cottage

Charly Wehrle, in fact, the head butcher, the farmer’s cabin. Just like Stephanie’s voice, 51. Managed the reintalanger cabin for three years. Charly Wehrle had before. 24 summers long. Today we have a small tour to Pine Lodge on the Roll, 1912 reintalanger cabin still open. The season just starts on December 25th.

Charly Wehrle is at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen institution, “the uncrowned king of Wetterstein”. Stuiben and the Oberreintal hut which he managed. the From 1986 to 2009 he was a tenant of the powerful reintalanger hut. As long as no one does, says Wehrle. For several years, the Allgäuer mountain guest was a guest at the Frederick-Simms-Hütte in the Lechtal Alps in Austria.

Next to him is Stephanie’s voice. Tall woman with long brown hair, friendly smile, Werdenfelser dialect. Since 2016, he has been a tenant of the reintalanger cabin. Before that, he was a shack, a stranger, without any experience. Together with his husband Michael, he ran it in front of a vegetable and fruit shop in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, supplying the Wehrle cottages. That’s how the two hosts met.

E-bikes – yes or no?

tuner and Wehrle are two different trees anyway. The key question for the mountain scene shows. E-bikes – yes or no? Charly Wehrle is angry when he thinks about an electric bicycle. Findings: the one who has no experience in the mountains, in the Alps. Charging stations located in mountain huts? “Nonsense,” he says.

the voice is typing something different. “E-bikes are clearly more of a reintalanger hut,” she says. As for the kirchenerin, but that’s fine. It’s nice that a lot of elderly and physically weaker people can be in the mountains, she says and looks at the small waterfall next to the trail.

more than 10,000 overnight stays

The rush to your cabin is huge, says the tuner. You have a third more mountain tourists than in 2016. Gather over 10,000 nights a year. To Wehrles in the best of times, it’s 8500. It was also a record for a reintalanger hut: When the Cult of Wardens took over, it wasn’t even 3000 nights.

Only 13 farmers signed up for the cabin in 1986, he says. Since 2016 newcomers Stephanie and Michael Tuner have committed to the cabin, there have been more than 100 applicants. “There’s going to be a huge administrative avalanche on the shack today,” Wehrle said. He talks about hygiene standards, kitchen rules and staff administration. “I have to document every hour of the mini-jobber,” says the tuner. This 1369 meters above sea level is no different than in the valley. The cabin itself has not changed in all the years. The tuner only came with a new hot air oven in the kitchen, as well as an electronic cash register system. Pencil and paper for work, as in the case of Wehrle. Speaking of the kitchen: there are a few more dishes, since the tuner took over the reintalanger hut. “Before, I was just a Kasseler with sauerkraut, meatloaf, noodles and fried meat,” says Wehrle. Now there are even cheese dumplings at reintalanger hut. “a lot of work,” says Wehrle.

Guests expect more and more

guests will always expect more, say both hosts. Many visitors are no longer satisfied with coffee. Then it should be at least Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato or iced coffee. “Many guests ask for too much,” says the owner of the cabin. Not only culinary. Constant hot water, electricity for smartphones, garbage disposal: “The expectation of a mountain hut is too high,” says the tuner. Plastic remains are a big problem. “No one understands that we need to take the garbage to the valley with the help of a helicopter.” Even in the cracks in the wood of the benches, some visitors hide their trash.

guests rain on the hut

A quick scan of the internet shows the forums how innkeepers are with guest expectations: “no mirror”, “no pancakes”, “food selection is very low”, “Sleep, I think it’s too tight”. Nothing for some guests of Reintalanger to be upset about.

a tuner can tell a lot of stories. Guests who want to pay by card, after asking the cigarette machine, or even bitcoin beer, try the invoice. “Someone asked this before,” she says, “if there’s a gas station nearby to pick up cash.”

the tuner died in an accident in the mountains

Two hosts can reach the new fir cabin, which was opened only last year. Under the umbrella, take a seat on the terrace. “After this season, I’m quitting,” says the tuner. It was just too much responsibility for you. Last year, her husband died in a tragic mountain accident near the reintalanger hut. “It’s far too soon that Michi is gone,” says Wehrle.

The mountaineering club is 150 years old

the employees, some from the Wehrles days, were like family to the tuner. Your close-up helped. “This is what makes the cottage,” Huts-Boss says. “This cohesion, this energy.” Charly Wehrle designed the reintalanger cabin with a family atmosphere 33 years ago, says the voice. That has not changed to this day. If much else has changed.
