The protesters, referring to GDR deputy Gabriel Serville, demanded more funding for Guyana’s health, particularly for resuscitation funds at a hospital with 40 deaths from Covid-19 and 6,851 cases since March, health authorities identified Monday night as the area most affected by the new coronavirus abroad.
The event was organized at a time when the prefect and the director of the regional Health Agency (ARS) were in the prefecture for a meeting with the Senate investigative committee on the management of the epidemic. “While I was in the office, (…), I was informed that tires and wood were burning in front of the prefecture,” Prefect Marc Del Grande said on Tuesday evening.

“We were two fingers away from a fire generalized to the prefecture (…) It was a wrong procedure that could have consequences, very serious for a public building whose construction began in 1729 and is part of Guyana’s heritage,” he emphasized. The prefect assured that “everything was done by the State Department to avoid provocations”.
Mayouri Health Guyana Collective, a branch of the Too Violans Association, including requests for hospital resuscitation with a capacity of fifty beds in Guyana, including four in Kourou, without a resuscitation service. Last week, ARS promised the imminent opening of two resuscitation beds in Kourou.
