French Polynesia has experienced a sharp increase in the number of positive cases of Covid-19 in three days, the community’s presidency acknowledged in a press release on Tuesday morning. Some 43 new cases have been reported since Saturday, and a long line stretched to Papeete on Monday in front of the Louis Malardé Institute, which runs tests and analyzes them. The clusters are restaurants that organized festive evening activities, but several cases were also detected among the medical staff of the French Polynesia Hospital Center. Tahiti, the most populous island, is the most affected, but there are also cases on Bora Bora, Moorea and Rangiroa.

The anger of the population

According to the presidency, of the 50 cases detected in recent weeks, “only 10 were infected abroad and 38 cases were infected locally.” For the other two positive cases, “no epidemiological link” could be detected.

Back to school is due to take place this week in French Polynesia. For now, the local government has not announced restrictions on gatherings. However, some sports associations, such as rugby, have already suspended their training and competitions.
