According to WHO’s scientific director, more than 200 vaccine candidates have been studied worldwide, and a dozen clinical trials are underway.
The World Health Organization hoped on Thursday that several hundred million Covid-19 vaccines could be produced by the end of the year, and as many as two billion by 2021. “If we’re very lucky, there will be one or two candidates before the end of this year,” she said during a virtual press conference. The top WHO chief identified three population groups that should be vaccinated first: front-line workers such as doctors and police officers, the most vulnerable people such as the elderly, and people living in high-transmission environments such as urban slums and health centers.

Soumya Swaminathan explained that scientists are analyzing 40,000 genome sequences of the new coronavirus, which has caused more than 450,000 deaths worldwide, and indicated that it has not mutated in key areas that would, in particular, reduce the severity of the disease. Dexamethasone, a steroid, is currently the only drug that appears to improve the survival of patients with Covid-19.
