The Samsung Galaxy S8 is one of the best phones we’ve reviewed this year, but let’s face it: it’s expensive. Some people really don’t need anything more than something cheap and reliable to get them through the day, and that’s why AT&T sub-brands Cricket Wireless and GoPhone give them a choice.
On Friday, Cricket Wireless added Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Amp Prime 2, and GoPhone Galaxy Express 3 to its lineup.
The Galaxy S8 needs virtually no introduction. It has a sharp 6.2-inch curved edge-to-edge Super AMOLED (2960 x 1440 pixels) display, Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a USB Type-C connector. it is completed with a 3500 mAh battery with support for fast charging; a dedicated button for Samsung’s Bixby, a virtual assistant powered by artificial intelligence; Bluetooth 5 with support for simultaneous music streaming; and sensors like the fingerprint reader and iris scanner.

The Galaxy Amp Prime 2 is at the opposite end of the hardware spectrum. It has a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display (800 x 480 pixels) powered by Samsung’s quad-core Exynos 3 chip and 1GB of RAM. It has 8 GB of storage (expandable via MicroSD card), two cameras (5 MP rear and 2 MP front), 2050 mAh battery and touch-sensitive control buttons.
The Amp Prime 2 is $150 at Cricket Wireless.
If none of that suits you, there’s a third option: the Galaxy Express 3. It has a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED (800 x 480 pixels) screen and Qualcomm’s entry-level Snapdragon 400 processor. There is 1 GB of RAM and a removable 2000 mAh battery, 8 GB of internal memory and two cameras: a 5 MP rear model and a 2 MP selfie camera. Otherwise, you’ll find a fairly standard array of equipment, including GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a MicroUSB connector.

Now’s not a bad time to jump on the AT&T prepaid bandwagon. In March, GoPhone increased its data limit to 6 GB (for $40 a month) and introduced an unlimited plan for $60 a month. Earlier this year, Cricket increased the amounts of several of its plans: 3GB for $40 a month, 8GB for $50 and 12GB for $60.
It is worth noting, of course, that both carriers impose restrictions that the other does not. GoPro limits unlimited plans to 3 Mbps and video streaming to 1.5 Mbps. Meanwhile, Cricket limits LTE and High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA+) speeds to 8 Mbps and 4 Mbps, respectively.
