Meet Danny Meng, Survivor of Tsarnaev’s Carjacking on Netflix’s American Manhunt: Boston Marathon Bombing

Netflix’s American Manhunt: Boston Marathon Bombing explores one of Boston’s worst tragedies when two explosions killed three people and injured many others during the annual 2013 Boston Marathon on April 15.

Danny Meng, who is originally from China and immigrated to the US in 2009 to pursue a master’s degree at Northeastern University, was one of the locals involved in the incident. Incidentally, on April 18, 2013 (3 days after the bombing), terrorists Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev stood behind Danny’s car and threatened him with a gun before getting into the vehicle. He was then forced to drive to the Watertown location.

When they arrived in Watertown, the attackers asked Danny to sit in the passenger seat as they moved several boxes from their own car to the van. After running out of gas, they drove in search of a gas station because they planned to travel to New York overnight. Fortunately, after finding one, Danny took advantage of the distraction and ran to another gas station.

He then convinced the clerk to let him call 911. So, after the police arrived, Danny found out that his captors had confessed to the Boston Marathon bombing, and gave them the GPS number to track his car. Not long after, the police tracked down the duo and Danny was able to return home.

Due to his brave action, Danny was hailed as a hero by many. But he said the real heroes are the police and the survivors who taught him an important lesson. “He changed the way I think about my life. Now every day is a gift,” he added.
