Based on those exchanges, Michelle was convicted in 2017 of inadvertently encouraging him to end her own life. This case wasn’t that big of a deal yet until HBO picked it up as a documentary, I love you, now die: Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter. Featuring interviews with Roy’s family, Carter’s attorney, key witnesses and reporters covering the story and the ensuing trial, he raised national questions about mental health. But most importantly, both Michelle and her parents refused to participate.
