How many times has the point been there? Called de Gaulle and became the head of free France, and the founder of the Fifth Republic, this seems like a sign of destiny. So well that most French are convinced that: the general bore a predetermined name – an aptonym, as experts say. That’s quite true, but… not for the reason we believe.

The first hint of history and etymology: according to the most likely hypothesis, Gaulle would be the original name… in German wal(l)e, which is no shortage of salt for those who opposed collaboration with the Nazis. Fortunately, the meaning of this word more closely matches the personality of the hero of the Resistance Movement: it actually means “military fort”. For this reason, walle is a fairly common surname in Flemish, found for example in the form van der Walle, denoting the inhabitant of a house located near a wall (this is also wall in English).

We still need to understand how we got from Walle to Gaulle. In this regard, two phenomena combined their effects, the first of which dates back to the end of antiquity.
In the fifth century, when the Roman Empire fell, the Franks settled in northern Gaul. If they are not numerous enough to impose their language, they change it, even though the Low Latin spoken in those areas is very strong. They especially introduce many words that start with [w]. However, the Gallo-Romans did not know this sound and had a lot of trouble pronouncing it. As a result, they distort it, saying, first of all [gw]. The wall imported by the Franks, therefore, becomes at that time something like [gwalle] ago [w] eventually it will disappear completely. The result: in a few decades, that’s how you move from [walle] to [gwalle] and [galle]. The case is not unique: in the same way, the words war appeared in the French (de werra, “rest, disorder, strife”); boy (from wrakjo, “wanderer”) or girls (from warjan, “to defend, protect”), but also the first name William (from Whilhelm, born from will, “will”, and helm, “helmet, helmet”).
Well, that’s all well and good, you’ll say, but we’ve arrived in Galle, not Gaulle. So I have yet to explain the transition from -alle to -aulle. In fact, this change in spelling is due to a change in pronunciation that can be summarized as follows: when the consonant [l] followed by the second consonant (rest [l], in this case), ends in the Xith century saying “or”. Gall is pronounced a bit like “gal-or”. Over time, this sound will evolve [gâo-]in the fifteenth century, and finally in [go-]from the sixteenth century.
And here, schematically, how walle became galle, and then Gaulle. As the general said: Did you hear me?

And he thought of everything. “If it is said that Nissart or Occitan have no cultural interest because French is more used, then nothing prevents us from saying tomorrow that French has no interest in globalization because English is more used. To talk about utilitarianism about identity, language or culture is very dangerous “. Let it be heard.

It was a heartbreaking voice, sensitivity, the soul of an artist. He writes texts, poetry, subtle, experiences rare words, invented melodies, delicately. It’s very simple: she’s sometimes compared to Barbara, and she’s buried in awards (including the Académie Charles-Cros top prize) and rave reviews, from Music World to People’s magazine to Release. Marilis Orionaa sings Gascon, and if you don’t know, this is your chance to find out (below: lyrics in Gascon, French translation is on the video).
