Death in the Digital Age- Memorializing Someone’s Facebook Account

Facebook holds a lot of precious moments and memories of so many people. You continue to make memories and share to Facebook so your friends and relatives can see it too. You can also relive all those special moments whenever you log into your Facebook account and revisit those photos. But have you ever thought about what happens to your Facebook account when you die? No one really wants to think about that. Facebook is also interested in this and has a policy of marking the Facebook account of the deceased accordingly.

If someone in your family or Facebook friends has passed away and their account is still active, here are the options available.

  • Legacy contacts

Legacy contacts are contacts that the deceased person selected prior to his/her death. This could be a family member or friend who can manage the person’s account after they pass away.

The inherited contacts are:

  • Allowed to create a pinned post at the top of the deceased’s timeline, update their profile and cover photos, and respond to new friend requests. They can also download archives of photos, timeline posts, and profile information of the user with the prior permission of the deceased user.
  • They cannot log into the dead user’s account, check his personal information, such as Facebook messages. I can’t delete this person’s posts, photos, or friends.

To select a legacy contact, you need to follow these steps:

  • Log in to your Facebook account and go to settings.
  • In the ‘Privacy’ section, select ‘Old Contacts’.
  • Then click ‘Edit’, enter the name of your friend or family member and click ‘Add’.
  • You can then notify the selected person of your decision as they will be the one to ask Facebook to mention your account.
  • Once you’ve done this, you can decide if you want them to download a copy of your Facebook account under data storage. If so, click the check box, and then click Close.

If you don’t want to choose a legacy contact before you die, no one will be allowed to manage your Facebook account and they can only bookmark it.

  • Tag someone’s Facebook account

Now, if a person has passed away without establishing a legacy contact, you can still ask Facebook to memorialize their account. Facebook knows how important personal profiles are to the family and friends of the deceased.

Facebook reviews applications, but applicants don’t have to be law enforcement or family members. Anyone can submit a request form. This is done to ensure that the marking happens at the right time.

How to bookmark a Facebook account?

You can do this by filling out the form in the help section and asking Facebook to memorialize the account. Once approved by Facebook, the account will be restricted to friends only and sensitive data, if any, will be deleted. However, profiles and walls will remain active so friends and family can post memories and express condolences.

The word ‘Remembrance’ will be used before the name of the memorialized account. The account won’t appear in Facebook ads, in the People You May Know section, and won’t be sent birthday reminders. This also prevents account hacking as memorialized accounts cannot be logged in at any time.

Delete memorialized account

Immediate family members of the deceased can also request that Facebook remove their profile completely.

For this purpose, you must fill out the Special Requests for Deceased Account form. You’ll need to provide their full name, email address, date of death, and timeline URL. You will also need to provide proof that you are a member of the immediate family by presenting a birth certificate, death certificate or proof of authorization.

Download memorialized account information

The deceased can specify in their will who will access the data on your Facebook account and Facebook will respect their decision. To whom the deceased has given instructions, they will be able to download the account information upon presentation of a prior authorization or court order.

How to bookmark a Facebook page?

There is no specific process that you must follow to allow you to bookmark your Facebook page. Once a Facebook account is memorialized and no one has access to it, the linked pages will still be there, but there will be no activity on them. In the event that the family or friends of the deceased request the deletion of the Facebook account in question, the linked Facebook pages will also be deleted.

Contact Facebook Help if you’re unable to memorialize a (deceased) family member’s Facebook account.
