Former Keeper of the Seal and former CEO of Elf-Aquitaine Albin Chalandon has died, Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti announced in a tweet on Thursday.
“With the death of Albin Chalandon, France lost one of its freedom fighters, the Republic lost one of its great servants, and the Ministry of Justice, one of its former guardsmen. At this moment, I think with emotion, his wife, his children and his relatives,” the minister wrote.
Albin Chalandon, who led a dual career as a politician and businessman, was 100 years old. Born on June 11, 1920 in Reyrieux (Ain), a graduate in literature, he joined the Resistance Movement and contributed to the liberation of Paris in 1944. After the inspection of finances, he became a member of the cabinet of Léon Blum, then president of the provisional government. He then got involved in political life and in 1948 joined the RPF (Gaulist). In 1952, he founded the commercial Bank of Paris, which he chaired from 1964 to 1968.

With the income from politics in 1958, with General de Gaulle, he became the general secretary of the UNR (1958-59), and then the deputy general secretary of the UDR (1974-75). In 2010, he was detained in the case of Visionex, a company suspected of making Internet terminals for secret betting, and the target of an investigation in which his son was accused. It is about one of the mentors of the former Minister of Justice Rachida Dati. Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor and Cross of War 39-45, Albin Chalandon was the father of three children. He shared his life with journalist Catherine Nay.
