Debate as Woman Tells Niece To Talk to Priest Over ‘Demon’ Baby Girl Name

Netizens were left confused after a Reddit user shared his aunt’s extreme reaction to the unusual baby name they chose.

Reddit user u/brotherToast13 posted a screenshot of a text exchange with an aunt, who disagreed with the decision to name her baby Lilith.

In the aunt’s initial message, she writes: “Maybe just call her Lily Marie? Please pray about that.”

Then the problem of the aunt with the name Lilith is explained, and the next message says: “I understand that yes [you] they are good people and [you] I am not aware of the possible horrible negative spiritual effects of the name. I have heard many exorcists talk about this. Please speak to the good priest.”

Messages continued to come from the aunt, who believed her niece was naming her unborn child “after a demon.”

According to a popular website a lump, the name Lilith means belonging to the night. The meaning of the name comes from the ancient Akkadian language of the Middle East, with connotations of a demon or spirit. There is also a mythological history of the name, as a lump suggests that Lilith was the first wife of Adam who was expelled from the Garden of Eden for his disobedience.

Results from a 2022 survey by YouGov showed that five percent of names were chosen due to a religious reference, which also accounted for four percent of middle names. The most common reason for choosing a name was simply that they liked the way it sounded, with 30 percent of respondents saying that was the reason their parents chose the name.

Naming a child after a family member is also a common reason for choosing a particular name, with 27 percent of respondents saying it was the reason for their first name and 43 percent saying it was responsible for their middle name.

A viral Reddit post reveals that the aunt sent four consecutive messages to the OP (the original poster), insisting that the name Lilith “can harm” a child and warning that “parents can curse their children.”

The author build your town, Florence Ann Romano spent 15 years as a babysitter and now works as a child care advocate. Romano, whose advocacy encourages parents to feel empowered, said choosing a baby name is often “a hotly debated topic within the family.”

roman said news week: “Whether you’re using a last name and need approval or considering a more unusual name for your child, it seems like everyone has an opinion. The bottom line is that you don’t owe anyone an explanation or need to ask permission. It’s your child and your choice.

“If people hold a strong opinion about a name due to religious reasons or concerns, the appropriate course of action would be to keep it to themselves (assuming you and your parents do not belong to the same belief system). Imposing your beliefs on others will not change anyone’s opinion. It will only further alienate or isolate.”

Romano, who serves on the board of directors of the Children’s Research Fund and a founding member of Sesame Street’s Leadership, added that parents should only seek approval of a first name when it comes to a last name. It would be polite to check if the siblings or other relatives are happy with the decision.

Since the Reddit post was shared on June 22, it has already generated over 67,400 upvotes and over 14,800 comments. There is a lot of humor among the comments and many Redditors can’t understand Auntie’s need to push her opinion on the OP.
