The documentary “Deadly Game: The Mark and Delia Owens Story” about two American conservationists aired on ABC’s Turning Point program on March 30, 1996. They traveled halfway around the world to pursue a cause, said show co-host Diane Sawyer. A young, in love American couple with idealistic values. A unique environment would put that love to the test.
The documentary is in many ways a typical white savior story, an emotionally charged tale of two telegenic Americans on a mission to protect elephants from poachers and dishonest African officials. The “strange place” was Zambia, a country in south-central Africa that was once known as Northern Rhodesia. But the most striking feature of the documentary is that it is also a snuff film, and I say that without hyperbole.
The alleged killing of a poacher, which was caught on camera while he was already shot and lying on the ground, was included in this ABC program. The narrator of the story, journalist Meredith Vieira, does not reveal the identity of the victim. The person or people who fired the fatal shots off camera have also not been identified. There isn’t much evidence in the video that the person killed was a poacher, and the ABC script actually refers to the victim as a “disruptor,” though it’s unclear exactly where the intrusion occurred.
I did not see this show when it first aired, but I later received a copy of the videotape from conservationists concerned with the preservation of African species. They were of the opinion that the on-air killing of the alleged poacher was only a minor part of a larger story more akin to Heart of Darkness than Born Free.
The 2018 novel Where the Crawdads Sing, which has sold more than 12 million copies to date and is being adapted into a Reese Witherspoon-produced feature film coming out later this week, is what most people associate Delia Owens with today.
