Design your own PS5 controller with this handy tool

If you were hoping to customize your PS5 DualSense controller, you’re in luck. Scuf Gaming, a company known for creating high-end third-party gear, has released a new customization tool for its Reflex controller. PS5 owners can use a tool similar to Xbox Design Lab to create their ideal gamepad, complete with custom parts.

Scuf’s standard Reflex is perhaps the closest thing to an Xbox Elite Series 2 that the PS5 has. The controller features mappable rear paddles, grips, interchangeable sticks and more. The company’s newly released build tool gives gamers a level of customization yet to be seen in Sony’s DualSense.

Corsair’s Director of Gaming Product Management Jonas Ferry walked me through the process of creating a controller using Scuf’s web builder. You’ll start by selecting a faceplate. Nine colors and 23 custom patterns are currently available, including galactic designs and some more abstract options. Ferry says Scuf plans to add more options over time as it has with previous controllers. From there, players can change the colors on anything, including triggers, bumpers, the D-pad, and more.

While customizing colors is always fun to use, Scuf goes a step further than tools like Xbox Design Lab, which are purely cosmetic. Players can choose custom clubs that have a domed or concave design, and there is a short and tall variant of each.

More intriguingly, the tool allows gamers to tweak the features that define DualSense. For an additional fee, players can swap out the adaptive triggers for “instant” ones that will be easier to press. The tool also gives users the option to completely remove rumble from the controller as a weight reduction measure.

Of course, major customization can come at a cost. A standard controller will set gamers back $200, but the price can quickly climb into the $300 range, depending on how many custom colors and features are used. Even with the high price, Scuf offers a service that Sony doesn’t want to create itself. For those who want more control over their aesthetics and playstyle, it’s a tempting service.

If you want to try creating your own Scuf Reflex, you can try the tool for free on his website.
