It seems that Covid-19 did not spoil the fun: thousands of people, especially young Parisians and tourists, gathered en masse on Tuesday night in Paris to attend the 14th of July fireworks, despite very heavy security and calls from the authorities to stay at home due to Covid-19.

During the day, a police prefecture was set up, a wide restricted zone around the Eiffel Tower, from where fireworks were set off, inviting Parisians to watch the show on television. But during the evening, thousands of people gather along the river Seine and especially on the Esplanade des Invalides, to see the famous fireworks in Paris.

“We came because it’s a tradition, we do it every year,” explain Kenza, Leah and Johanna, three 19-year-old students in Paris. Perched on top of the balustrade of the Alexandre-III bridge that leads to the Home for the Invalids, with a beautiful view of the Eiffel Tower, they say they “didn’t hear” about the prefecture’s call.

“We respect the distance, there were fewer of us than usual,” claims Lea, who, like the vast majority of those gathered, did not wear a mask. It’s always better to be outdoors, she said.

Idil, a 26-year-old Turkish woman who has lived in Paris for 9 years, says, “when we leave the closed space, it’s nice and I enjoy it,” so much, she says, “I’m young and healthy and therefore not in danger.” Still on the bridge, Ousmane, Bouba and Mamadou, 34, 20 and 21 years old, enjoy their pleasure: these three young families in Guinea have come especially from Melun for the fireworks. “It’s nice to see the world, and it’s always a great pleasure to celebrate a national holiday,” says the first.

On the esplanade des Invalides, Susan, a 48-year-old Dutch tourist, doesn’t expect to see lawns covered with the world, like those that offer the best view of the Eiffel Tower. “The world is full of risks, we’ll find somewhere more peaceful,” she said, taking his children elsewhere.

The crowd had to stay on the promenade in the evening, before going out a little before one in the morning under the pressure of law and order forces.
