A lot has changed in between Fate and Fate 2. Gone and reworked the ridiculous number of currencies and items in the original game, improving the ways you can upgrade your weapons and armor. A unique currency called “Legendary Shards” is now used to upgrade high-level gear and is essential for obtaining the best, most powerful weapons and armor in the game. But if you’re not familiar with legendary shards and their uses, they can be hard to come by and easy to waste. Here’s everything you need to know about legendary shards, including what they’re good for, who you can give them to, and why you should hold onto them.

Infusion currency

Legendary Shards are primarily required for use Fate 2equipment power supply system, also known as “Infusion”. How it works requires a little explanation. Each weapon and piece of armor you get for your character comes with a number attached to it that indicates its power, and the average of everything your character is wearing determines their total power.
Strength is a measure of your offensive and defensive abilities, so getting better gear to increase your power is key to becoming strong enough to handle Fate 2top tier content, such as Nightfall strike or Shadowkeep’s Garden of Salvation raid. Where to get legendary shards

The most reliable source of legendary shards is dismantling legendary gear you no longer need. You can do this from the Inventory menu. Each time you dismantle a legendary item, you’ll get three shards, plus some gun parts that you can exchange for reputation bonuses with the Gunsmith in the tower.
If you’re feeling brave, exotic gear will give you 5 shards when disassembled. Even some shaders can break down into shards, so always go through your vault and see what you can get rid of if you run out.
If you’re looking to get more out of your teardowns, you should pay attention to your Season Pass, which gives you rewards for leveling up. Certain levels will give you a bundle of shards. But most importantly, you’ll get a legendary shard dismantler at rank 20. This is a seasonal perk that gives you a bonus shard every time you dismantle a legendary or exotic scavenger, which will really add up over time.
If you can’t bear to be separated from your gear, you’ll want to meet Spider, the Fallen Vendor located in Tangled Shore. Spider offers a rotating “Material Exchange”, where you can buy materials using other materials. Spider sells legendary shards from time to time, so be sure to check in with him every reset cycle to see if you can trade shimmer or planetary materials for shards.
You’ll also receive reputation tokens for completing activities on planets, which you can give to the appropriate planet vendor in exchange for increasing your “reputation” with those characters. Every time you reach a certain reputation threshold for a character, you get a reward, and sometimes that reward is Legendary Shards instead of new gear.
If all else fails, simply playing the game will do. Not only will you regularly get legendary drops to dismantle, but things like bounties, chests, and engrams can sometimes give shards. So don’t worry too much about growing shards, as you will get them naturally as long as you engage in various activities.
Getting the best gear from Xur

In addition to using legendary shards for infusion, you can also use them to purchase top tier weapons and armor. Legendary Shards also replace old ones Fate currency called Strange Coins. In the original game, Strange Coins were used to purchase new exotic-level items and equipment from Xur, a vendor appearing in Fate every friday.

If you’ve been saving up, Xur also sells “fate engrams”, which randomly give you a piece of new exotic gear. You have no control over what you will receive, but it will definitely be something that is not in the collection in your vault. Fate engrams cost 97 shards to buy one — the equivalent of more than 30 legendary items — but it’s a great option for those looking to complete all exotics.
Buying equipment from faction vendors
Legendary Shards also act as currency when you interact with the game’s faction characters, such as Zavala, Ikora, Devram, Failsafe, Asher, Sloane, and Brother Vance. Each of these will give you high-level rewards when you complete certain objectives for them throughout the game, including guns like the Drang, a legendary pistol that’s paired with an exotic hand cannon that you can unlock by completing a lengthy quest. After you first get those guns, you can use Legendary Shards to buy them again, in case you accidentally take them apart.
You can also buy items from vendors using a combination of legendary shards and faction tokens, even if you’ve never bought them before. The various reward slots are unlocked after picking up the standard reward engrams from each faction, which you’ve probably already done if you’ve been playing the game since launch, and you’ll always be able to buy a piece of armor for each slot as well as a rotating weapon. They aren’t cheap, but they eliminate the random element associated with standard engrams.
Purchase of attack equipment
If you missed any specific attack items during your party’s last run, you can use Legendary Shards to fill in the gaps. In any week that you have completed a Raid on Leviathan, you can use Legendary Shards and Calus Tokens to purchase raid items from Benedict, the Raid Vendor, in the tower. You can also do this for prestige tier raid gear, provided you’ve already completed a harder raid that week.
Buy engrams and mods, no questions asked
Finally, Guardians who simply want to roll the dice can spend Legendary Shards to purchase Legendary Engrams directly from the Cryptarch. Master Rahool in the Tower sells legendary engrams for 25 shards each. This isn’t a huge deal, especially for late-game players. You have to dismantle nine legendary items to get enough shards for a single, random engram: generally speaking, it’s better to run activities to get more engrams. Still, this is a quick way to get a new gun or helmet if you don’t feel like grinding.
Buying legendary engrams also creates more chances to find “masterpieces” of weapons and armor – Legendary items that can generate orbs of light for multiple kills and have added stat bonuses. The potential for this to happen is pretty low, but if you need a few Masterwork Cores for one of your other weapons, you can always buy a few engrams and take them apart. You can also use Legendary Shards and Masterwork Cores to re-roll the stats on a specific Masterwork weapon or piece of armor.
You can now also buy legendary mods from the armorer using a combination of legendary shards, and the choices will be updated daily. These include weapon and armor mods, including the ever-illusive breastplate mods, but the mod component requirement means you’ll need to have a few legendary mods in advance before purchasing.
Carefully choose the items you want to disassemble

Legendary Shard System i Fate 2Inventory space limitations for your character (and in your larger storage space known as your vault) encourage you to break down any equipment you may not need right away. It’s easy to see a piece of low-level legendary gear and figure you can just destroy it for shards and get it out of the way. But there are some nuances to legendary tier gear that make cracking it a gamble you might not always want to take.
Before breaking down a piece of legendary gear, open the “Details” screen. Gear will have random perks, especially armor that now comes with stats thanks to the game’s Armor 2.0 update. So even if some gear is of a lower power level than your other gear, you may find that its perks are worth keeping. Focus on fielding whatever gear you like rather than auto-damaging anything low level.
If you don’t know much about what gear is worth keeping and what isn’t, it’s best to dismantle only weapons you really don’t like or duplicate items. That way, you know you won’t be getting rid of something you later find out is a meta-dominant rare weapon.
