A man in a suit and sunglasses jumped out of a plane with $200,000 in cash on a rainy November night in 1971 and disappeared over the Pacific Northwest. Forty years later, at a local sportsbook, the former cocaine dealer was enjoying a drink with a friend when he recalled meeting the man he claimed to be the infamous “sky thief,” DB Cooper, in 1980.
Around 40 volunteers have been investigating the real DB Cooper as a result of his narrative for the past five years. Some 45 years ago, on November 24, DB boarded a plane bound for Seattle and informed the crew that he had a bomb. He demanded $200,000 and plenty of parachutes when the plane landed in Seattle and was evacuated, telling the crew to take him to Mexico.

Dick Briggs, was a drug dealer who was one of the suspects and was going around claiming to be DB Cooper. When Richard Kashanski learned of Ron Carlson’s intriguing history in 2011, he introduced Ron to Tom Colbert. In the past, Ron was a drug dealer, and sometime in February 1980, he was in Portland with an associate to buy drugs.
Then they made the decision to travel to a party that was taking place on Hayden Island in Oregon. A drug courier named Jon Richard “Dick” Briggs was present when Ron found him.
Dick pointed out a “hippie-looking” couple at the meeting, according to Ron. Dick then informed him that he would find some of Cooper’s ransom money in Washington, on the north bank of the Columbia River. Ron ignored the prediction because it seemed absurd at the time until he saw the news a few days later.
The same couple and their son discovered approximately $5,800 in ransom money while vacationing outside of Vancouver, Washington. Ron and his partner made the decision at that point not to mention their encounter with Dick again. Ron didn’t mention it until years later, prompting Tom and his team to investigate Dick’s accusations.

However, Bob introduced Dick to a man his old college friend believed to be the real Sky Robber, the man Bugsy would follow as a model for his criminal persona. Along with his younger brother Dan his, Bobb installed tennis courts and gym flooring in Oregon and beyond in the early 1970s while working as a flooring contractor. Robert Rackstraw, a Vietnam War veteran from California who worked in the same industry as Bob and Dan, joined forces with them to complete certain projects in the Los Angeles area.
Dick, who had to leave Portland for a while, joined the apartment project.
Robert had a criminal mind that Bob had already figured out. Bob said that Robert was the worst possible influence on Dick. “Rackstraw did things sober that Briggs could only do when he was drunk,” Bob told journalist and documentarian Tom Colbert, author of the 2016 book. the last outlaw masterwhich proves that Rackstraw is DB Cooper.
One time, Robert and Dick went together where Robert robbed a cache of weapons by driving a stolen truck through the front door of a gun store.
“I still don’t think Rackstraw is DB Cooper,” he says. “My brother Danny knows it. I spent a lot more time with him. He believes that.”
But as the years passed, Bob stopped spending time with Dick. Dick was out of control. One night, Pudgy recalls, Briggs brutally beat the estranged husband of one of Pudgy’s waiters and then threatened to beat up* the waitress. He spent the night in jail. A life of crime and cocaine soon caught up with Briggs.
Bob regretted that Briggs could never correct himself. He believes his friend’s problems stemmed from deep-seated insecurities. That was literally what eating glasses and other bizarre behavior was all about. “He was very smart,” Bob said of Dick Briggs. Added Bob: “He got very good grades in Oregon. He taught for a time in the Portland public schools.”
