It was in October 2010 when he met Youssef Khater while participating in the Jungle Marathon in Brazil. Dominic, an athlete from the UK, said he felt he was “in a rut” in his everyday life, so he decided to take up an activity. Soon Dominic realized that he wanted more adventures, like getting closer to Youssef.
When they started talking as friends, Dominic said he was interested in investing in real estate and then accepted his new friend’s invitation to run an ultramarathon in Chile. Youssef told him that they might even look into joint venture opportunities. (Later, lawyer Rocío Berríos discovered that Youssef was not really a marathon runner, but a fraud.)
As planned, Dominic went to Chile with cash for their joint venture. But since he did not want to take a significant amount with him while unexpectedly traveling to/from London again, he gave it to Youssef.
Dominic even received a signed promissory note stating that the money was for his safekeeping only and that Youssef would return it in full upon his return. However, that never happened. Dominic almost even gave up when his paths crossed again only to be attacked by Youssef.
Youssef Khater is also the same con man who in 2011 attacked Callie Quinn, a high school senior living in a large shared house in Santiago, Chile.
Callie’s story ended up garnering national attention, with a man getting in touch claiming they had raised $8,000 to sponsor Youssef in the race, only for him to pull out at the last minute.
Youssef nearly kills Callie by heating her head with a piece of metal before strangling her, wrapping her in tarp, and attempting to bury her alive under a pile of ash.
Where is Dominic Rayner today?
Dominic Rayner not only escaped the situation we talked about earlier, but also filed a complaint against his attacker after he got home safely. He detailed to authorities every aspect of how Youssef tried to hit him over the head with a log.
That day, the last time they saw each other, Dominic “felt a rush of air” over his head as he turned to walk away from Youssef. He explained that his friend the con man only stopped when a crowd had gathered. The last memory of the perpetrator is him begging her not to say anything.
All Dominic wanted was his money that Youssef took from him in Santiago. But then he also knew that he was just wasting time.
Fast forward to today, it was unknown if Dominic was able to get any of his funds back or get justice for the attack. But he certainly seems content with his position in his life.
