Drag Queen Jax is a full-time drag queen and part-time photographer. In fact, she graduated in photography and videography from the School of Visual Arts. Find her photography work on FB @jacksonmcgphoto and her website “jacksonmcgoldrick.com”.

In November 2013, he even participated in an exhibition at the Gratia Gillespie Art Gallery in Atria Darien, 50 Ledge Road.

Now that she’s becoming a drag queen, Jax first took to drag as a way to create a satirical commentary on her suburban Connecticut upbringing. She used to formulate photographs around the conversations she overheard in her town and create heightened impersonations that she posed for the camera.

He made his first appearance as “Jax” on the open-air stage set up for local group Queen’s closing performance at the Icon in New York. That night he performed the Noah Cyrus song “My Way” and the response was phenomenal! “People refused to believe it was my first time performing in drag, my experience as an entertainer accelerated as soon as the music started,” he recalled.

However, its aesthetic has evolved over the years. “I quickly learned that withdrawal, by its very nature, is already very political and I don’t have to hit people over the head with it,” he explained. Now she designs her movement around the things she loves and who “Jackson” is: athlete, mixed Caribbean, suburban kid: “I found a way to tie it all together and that’s who/what JAX is,” she added.

For Jax, art is as dear as any other sport. In fact, his experience as a competitive athlete instilled in him a work ethic that he wants to carry over to his Drag.

So what sets Jax apart from the rest? Well, that’s the originality of it. Jax’s microphone work is 100% improvised. He doesn’t like performing scripted plays.

Overall, drag helped Jax learn to celebrate things she previously thought might hurt her growing up. So he wants to continue to inspire others to share their stories and be who they are at every opportunity: “You never know who can relate and who needs to hear from you. By sharing, you can help someone feel less alone,” she added.
