After the nine days of Navratri, people celebrate Dussehra on the tenth day with much excitement. Although this festival is generally known as Dussehra in North India and Karnataka, in West Bengal, people celebrate it as Vijayadashami. Bengalis mark the day by saying goodbye to the Maa Durga idol. There are also plays on the life of Lord Ram that take place all over the country, and many people gather to watch the great statues of Ravana being reduced to ashes.
In the Hindu lunar calendar, Dussehra falls on Shukla Paksha Dashmi in the month of Ashwin, one day after Maha Navami or at the end of Shardiya Navratri. In Hindu mythology, this day marks the victory of Lord Rama over the ruler of Lanka, Ravana. According to another legend, Maa Durga defeated Mahishasura after a nine-day, intense battle.
