A simple puzzle that has gone viral has left people completely confused. What at first glance looks like a complex puzzle, in reality has a very simple answer. However, the search for the right solution has left people scratching their heads.

The puzzle was posted on the X page. It is a picture of a board, the kind that is often kept in front of restaurants. The riddle written on the board reads: “What has 4 letters, sometimes 9 letters, but never 5 letters.” The post is shared with a simple headline that asks X users, “Who knows the answer?”

The post was shared a few hours ago. However, it went crazy viral. It has garnered close to 16.3 million views so far, and the numbers are growing fast. The stock also garnered tons of comments from people. While a few quickly came up with the answer, some couldn’t solve the puzzle.

“Someone tell me the answer,” user X posted. “They’re smart,” another complimented him. “The riddle plays with words. The question is not asked about the word that fits these criteria, but instead the facts about the words themselves are stated: ‘What’ has 4 letters. ‘Sometimes’ has 9 letters. But the word ‘never’ has 5 letters. So it’s just the number of letters in each word,” explained a third. “The answer is yes,” joked the fourth. “I got the answer from the comments. Now I feel stupid,” wrote a fifth.
The individual also asked a question to ChatGPT and shared the answer he received from the AI chatbot. “ChatGPT: That which has 4 letters, sometimes 9 letters, but never 5 letters. This is a classic puzzle. The answer is not a word, but a fact. The word ‘what’ has 4 letters, ‘sometimes’ has 9 letters and ‘never’ has 5 letters. The puzzle is worded in such a way as to mislead the reader into thinking that he should be looking for a word that meets all the conditions, but in fact it only states the number of letters in each word.”
