You can find a robot vacuum fairly easily these days, and you’ll pay anywhere from $100 for an inexpensive robot to over $1,000 for a robot vacuum with all the accompanying features. Ecovacs, a brand known for making reasonably priced yet high-tech robot vacuums, recently released a new 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop combo. It’s called the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO 950, and it claims to be the most powerful Deebot yet. I tested the OZMO 950 and here are my thoughts on the device.

What do you get?

Erika Rawes/Digital Trends

Ecovacs Deebot OZMO 950 comes with a lot of accessories. In addition to the robot and docking station, it comes with four side brushes (two for immediate installation and two spares), a pre-installed main brush, a direct suction option that you can exchange for the main brush, a water tank, a plate with a cleaning cloth, a wiping cloth from washable and reusable microfiber, disposable wiping cloths and two washable high-efficiency filtration systems (one pre-installed and one auxiliary).

Setting up the OZMO 950 was easy and the process took less than 10 minutes. After installing the side brushes and fully charging the device (it takes about 5 hours to fully charge the battery), I downloaded the EcovacsHome app, connected the OZMO 950 to the app (which only works on a 2.4Ghz network) and added the Ecovacs skill to Alexa to could control the robot with his voice.

Smart design and long battery life

Erika Rawes/Digital Trends

The OZMO 950 packs a ton of features and functionality into a relatively small robot. To promote the compact design, the OZMO 950 has a lift-up lid, and the trash can is hidden underneath. I can easily grab the trash can by the handle when I need to empty it. There is also a cleaning tool under the hood, so I don’t lose it when I need it to clean the main brush roller.

The squeegee plate attaches to the underside of the unit (much like most dustbins attach to robot vacuums). I can use the included reusable microfiber cloth or I can use one of the included disposable cleaning cloths. They are securely attached to the cleaning board with a Velcro-like adhesive that does not wear out over time.

At the top of the unit is a large “eye” that helps OZMO see its surroundings and map the room. You’d think that adding an eye would make Deebot have no problem traveling under furniture, but it doesn’t. At 93mm tall, the unit is still slim enough to travel under desks, couches and beds.

One complaint our reviewer had about its predecessor, the OZMO 930, was its short battery life. The OZMO 950 has an extremely long battery life, which runs for up to 200 minutes on a single charge. In addition, if the battery happens to run out during the cleaning cycle, it will automatically return to the charging station to increase power and then continue cleaning.

Carpets vs. hard floors

When vacuuming with the 950, I can use the main brush roller (which is better for carpets and deep cleaning) or the direct vacuum option (which is ideal for mopping and everyday cleaning). OZMO can detect carpets and boosts suction power as it sweeps over carpets to pick up deep-seated dirt and debris.

I watched the robot travel around, vacuuming the dirt from every part of my hardwood floors. As soon as it hit the carpet, I could hear it revving the engine and going harder. The suction power is so strong (24 cfm on high) that the OZMO 950 can absolutely replace an upright unit.

OZMO deletion

The wiping process is pretty painless – just fill the water tank, attach a cleaning cloth (either a reusable cloth or a disposable one), then place the wiping pad on the Deebot.

After placing the eraser board, Deebot 950 can enter OZMO erasing mode. What is OZMO deletion? Basically, Deebot can mop and vacuum at the same time, so you don’t have to do the two tasks separately. OZMO can remove up to 99.26 percent of bacteria from floor surfaces.

There are four different water flow levels: low, medium, high or ultra high. The low water level is for easier mopping and leaves the floors barely wet after each pass, while the ultra high water level cleans better because it wets the floor more as it travels. They can also choose between four different vacuum suction strengths: silent, standard, maximum or maximum plus. Quiet mode is good for OZMO mopping, as I can barely hear the vacuum but it still picks up bits of dust as it travels around mopping the floors.

Once the unit has finished mopping, simply remove the mopping plate, drain the water and remove the disposable cleaning cloth. If I use a reusable cloth, I can wash it off in seconds.

Improved navigation, fast operation

The OZMO 950 features Smart Navi 3.0, which uses lasers to navigate your home. Some of the previous Deebot models, such as the Deebot 711, have Smart Navi 2.0, which uses optical technology.

950 is fast. It travels around faster than any robot vacuum or mop I’ve ever seen. It is efficient in its automatic cleaning path, first cleaning the edges and then coming back and cleaning the center of the floor in an “S” pattern.

The OZMO 950 features Smart Navi 3.0, which uses lasers to navigate your home.

One thing that really impressed me about the 950 was its ability to orient itself and find its location even after I stopped the cleaning cycle. This was a problem with older Deebot models — the robot would often have to start a new cleaning cycle if I stopped it to brush something off or move the robot to another room. The 950 can detect its own location and continue the same cleaning cycle. Even if I move the dock, the robot can recognize the change and adjust without messing up my map.

Mapping, virtual borders and more

Speaking of mapping, the OZMO 950’s mapping capabilities are exceptional. It has multi-floor mapping for homes with more than one level and can store up to three different floor maps.

I can customize exactly how and when I want the robot to clean my home by creating a schedule or selecting specific areas of my home where I want the Deebot to clean. I can also create zones that I want Deebot to avoid and areas that I want Deebot to vacuum but not mop.

Like many other Deebot models, the OZMO 950 talks. It tells me when it’s charging, notifies me when it starts cleaning or when it’s saving the map. It is compatible with Google Home and Alexa, so the robot can be controlled by voice. I can sit on the couch and tell OZMO to clean my house while I relax.

The EcovacsHome app is already one of the most feature-rich robotic vacuuming apps available, but the combination of the app and the OZMO 950 takes the robotic vacuuming experience to a whole other level.

Very minor complaints

Although the OZMO 950 is a stellar unit, I have been frustrated with the robot a few times. On three separate occasions, the squeegee plate separated from the robot when the unit traveled around the carpet. The robot left the mop board and entered vacuuming mode. This was due to my own error, as I didn’t set the eraser plate correctly, but the unit loudly indicated that the plate was installed. This led me to believe that I had the erase board set up correctly. I later realized that I had to attach the eraser plate exactly to prevent it from coming off during operation (it has to click completely into place).

When Deebot is in OZMO mopping mode, it avoids carpets. But I have a very thin carpet in the entryway that it travels over. I had to create a “no wipe” zone in the app to prevent it from going over that thin carpet while wiping.

The 430 milliliter dustbin on the OZMO 950 is smaller, but still sufficient. I didn’t need to empty it during the cleaning cycle, but I couldn’t run more than two cleaning cycles without emptying the bin.

Warranty information

The Ecovacs Deebot OZMO 950 comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Our opinion

There’s no denying that the Deebot OZMO 950 is an advanced feature-rich robot with powerful suction and exceptional cleaning performance. The laser-guided navigation system OZMO 950 together with its overall awareness of itself and its surroundings creates a device that simply makes life easier for the user. The biggest drawback of the 950 is its price.

Is there a better alternative?

The OZMO 950 retails for $900, which is on the higher end of the price spectrum. Of course, the unit is advanced in terms of its power, mapping, navigation and features. But customers have come to rely on Ecovacs as a brand that makes affordable robot vacuums that still have higher-end features.

If you’re looking for a less expensive robot that still has the same advanced navigation, the Ecovacs Deebot 901 is a great option for under $300. However, the 901 only vacuums, not cleans. The same goes for Deebot 711 which has Smart Navi 2.0. I reviewed the Deebot 711 and appreciated the device’s high-end features and affordable price (you can get it for around $400).

If you’re looking for a 2-in-1 unit, there are other inexpensive robot vacuum and mop combos on the market, such as the iLife V8s (selling for around $200 on Amazon), but you won’t get the advanced navigation and app features you get with the OZMO 950.

How long will it last?

As well as being a high quality unit, the OZMO 950 also offers a host of extras (extra filter, side brushes and extra wiping cloth). The OZMO 950 should last you for years to come and you shouldn’t have to spend a bunch of extra money on replacement accessories.

Should you buy it?

That. If you want to fully automate the vacuuming and mopping in your home and are willing to spend a little more money for it, the Ecovacs Deebot OZMO 950 will not disappoint you.
