On May 4, a jury found in favor of the “Shape of You” singer, finding him not liable for copyright infringement.
Despite the favorable outcome, Sheeran was more frustrated than elated that the trial kept him away from his family during a time of personal loss.

However, he also revealed that his grandmother’s funeral was scheduled during the trial, which is why he was unable to attend due to his court appearance. According to ABC News, Sheeran was unable to attend his grandmother’s service.
Following the jury’s decision, the “Thinking Out Loud” singer expressed his disappointment at missing out on such an important family event. “Being in New York for this trial meant I missed my grandmother’s funeral in Ireland and I will never get that time back,” he lamented. Sheeran went on to describe the significant toll the trial has taken on him and his loved ones.
While it was clear Sheeran was deeply affected by not attending his grandmother’s funeral, he hopes no other songwriter will have to endure a similar situation in the future.
