Meet Howard Haysom, brother of Elizabeth Haysom
Elizabeth Haysom has five siblings from her parents’ previous marriage. He has two brothers from his mother’s previous marriage named Howard Haysom and Richard Haysom.
After the shocking incident, Howard spoke publicly about his family, saying: “Mum was a spirited woman, and Pop kind of looked up to her. [late UK Prime Minister, Winston] Churchill. So if you can imagine Churchill and Lady Astor beaming, loving each other and raising a family together, [that was us]. It was a wonderful family.”
In 1987, Howard testified that he was not happy with Elizabeth placing the blame on Jens, as he had learned from their mother that the two were supposed to visit during the fateful weekend.
“She has lied to me in the past and frankly she continues to,” Howard said. “I personally am not satisfied with the explanation given by her guilty plea. I think Elizabeth was in the house at the time of the crime.”
He also testified that he believed Elizabeth was there when her parents were killed. Howard said his parents’ killer, Jens Soering, “has turned into a cottage industry of lies, criminal celebrity and evil.”
Elizabeth Haysom, a former student, and her German boyfriend, Jens Soering, were serving time in prison for their involvement in the death of her parents. She is one of five children born to the late artist Nancy Astor Benedict Haysom and steel executive Derek William Reginald Haysom. In 1987, Haysom pleaded guilty to two counts of accessory to murder.
During Soering’s trial, she testified that she tricked her ex-boyfriend into committing the murders because her parents wanted them to break up. She was sentenced to 90 years in prison and served 32 of those years at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women in Troy, Virginia, before being released in 2019.
Elizabeth received a sentence of 45 years for each murder, to be served consecutively. The state of Virginia previously denied 14 parole applications from Elizabeth and her ex-boyfriend. However, in 2019, they received parole conditional on their deportation to Canada, and her ex to Germany.
