Elizabeth Rancourt, along with her partners Louis Jean and Michel Goodboot, has recently started broadcasting National Hockey League (LNH) matches on TVA Sports. As one of the few women to reach this rank, Elizabeth aims to break down prejudices within the industry one by one. However, she admits that even in 2021, sports journalists still occasionally face derogatory comments such as “Go back to your boilerplate” if they make a mistake. Nevertheless, with support from her best friend Chantal Machape and other friends who have paved the way for her, Elizabeth is determined to thrive in her role despite any negative comments.
It’s unfortunate that some people assume that women shouldn’t be watching hockey or reporting on it. Elizabeth has had people tell her to go back to the kitchen and play hockey instead. Some have even questioned why she wears a skirt when covering games. She acknowledges that this is the reality of 2021 and social media – people think they can say whatever they want without consequences. Elizabeth chooses to take it all in stride and not let it bring her down.
However, she recognizes that many women are eager to see more female representation in sports journalism. In fact, several women now feature NHL games on French television since Elizabeth broke a small glass ceiling by taking up a prominent position at TVA Sports. For years prior to joining TVA Sports, Elizabeth would travel across the country covering various sports events for TQS (which later evolved into V and then Noovo). She even joined the Argent Series which was spun off by Kibecor in 2016 after completing an undergraduate degree at McGill management school.
Hockey runs deep in Elizabeth’s family – her father Jean-Pierre Rancourt played the sport growing up and it has become a cherished tradition for their family to watch games together every Saturday night. It was initially strange for Elizabeth when she first started walking into dressing rooms to talk with players and coaches, but over time she has grown more confident in her role.
