News of Emily Maitlis

Emily Maitlis, a former Newsnight presenter, said the BBC’s criticism of online comments about Dominic Cummings was “nonsense” and expressed concern that increased political pressure had led to media self-censorship.

The BBC said Maitlis broke her fairness rules in 2020 when she claimed “the country could see” that the then prime minister’s adviser had breached quarantine regulations.

Maitlis, who later left the BBC, claimed the decision was made “without any due process” and could be used as a “message of reassurance” to the authorities.

A BBC official responded: “The BBC places the highest priority on objectivity and appropriate accuracy and we apply these standards to coverage on all issues.

“As we have previously stated in relation to Newsnight, any suggestion that we acted under pressure from the government or Number 10 is false. The BBC found the show violated its editorial standards and that decision remains in effect.

“Why did the BBC immediately and publicly seek confirmation of the opinion of a government spokesman, without any due process?” Maitlis asked a question during a lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival.

It makes no sense for an outfit known for strict adherence to etiquette. Unless maybe it’s sending a message of reassurance to the government?

She continued: “Let’s put this in the context of the BBC board, where another active member of the Conservative Party – a former Downing Street PhD and former adviser to rival BBC GB News – is now sitting, acting as the BBC’s impartial arbiter.”

Sir Robbie Gibb, Theresa May’s former communications director is probably who she’s referring to.

She further revealed that Mr Cummings had personally reached out to her to offer assistance during the impasse at the time.

The adviser did not break the rules, according to statements made by both Mr Cummings and the Prime Minister at the time.

Speaking during the festival’s opening speech on Wednesday, Maitlis argued that the media had failed to respond to attacks by populist parties and risked losing the trust of viewers.

The advisor’s controversial trip does not. 10 to Barnard Castle was the subject of a Newsnight episode that Maitlis presented in May 2020, saying: “Dominic Cummings broke the rules – the country could see that and was shocked that the government couldn’t.”

She said in her address that “a complaint phone call was made from Downing Street to BBC News management” the next morning. According to her, the BBC quickly discovered that the monologue violated standards of “reasonable fairness”.
