Every line in this trippy optical illusion is EXACTLY same… so do you see waves or zigzags?

A VERY weird optical illusion has people scratching their heads about whether the lines are curved or zig-zag.

The puzzling image is apparently based on a phenomenon called “curvature blindness.”

This optical illusion makes people scratch their heads at the shape of the lines.

Despite how they look in the illusion, all the lines are exactly the same: wavy, not zigzag.

Japanese cognition and illusion researcher Kohska Takahashi provided extensive scientific analysis and analysis of optical illusion in a recent issue of i-Perception journal.

Mr. Takahashi wrote: “Here we report a new illusion, the illusion of curvature blindness, which will provide new implications for contour perception, particularly for the underlying mechanisms of curvature and angle perception.”

Basically, our eyes can be tricked into seeing a wavy line as a zigzag line, depending on the color scheme of the line and the background.

He believes that when our brains are confused about whether or not a line is curved, it adopts a zigzag shape to make life easier.

In the image, the lines seen in the gray background appear to be in a zigzag pattern, because our brains are tricked into imagining an angle, something he calls “obtuse angle detection.”

“Physically, however, all the lines are wavy lines of identical shape; there is no triangle wave and therefore no angle,” Mr. Takahashi said.

He added: “Despite the simplicity and magnitude of the effect, to our knowledge, no one has reported this phenomenon.”

It’s not clear exactly why our brains perceive zigzag outlines, but Takahashi believes they normally see angles rather than curves when confused.
